Aitutaki, Cook Islands – The Island That Captivates the World

Where is the World Are We?

We are in Aitutaki, Cook Islands, in the South Pacific.

AITUTAKI, COOK ISLANDS
The Island That Captivates the World

When the Lonely Planet co-founder describes somewhere as ‘the world’s most beautiful island’, you can be sure that you are in for a treat. Incredible, inspiring, unbelievable, idyllic, and unimaginable, there are simply not enough superlatives to describe how amazing Aitutaki is.

Brought to light in 1779 by Captain Bligh, the Mutiny on the Bounty meant that Aitutaki had somewhat of a bloodthirsty history.

While European missionaries eventually settled on the island in the 19th century (as evidenced by the white, coral-encrusted walls of many churches), the island’s Polynesian history dates to around 900 A.D. Traditional songs and dances from this period still exist (though Christian hymns, known as imene metu, are also popular) and are performed by islanders with gusto and great pride.

The island is part of the Cook Islands, one of the most secluded and romantic archipelagos in the world. With its powder-white sand, warm turquoise waters, and sense of casual luxury, it is easy to see why the island has earned itself the moniker “honeymooner’s island”.

However, there is much more to Aitutaki than just fun in the sun. With a reef that completely encompasses a large turquoise lagoon, Aitutaki is considered one of the most spectacular diving and snorkeling destinations in the world.

Tropical excitement is heightened when, entering the main village via Zodiac along a narrow channel, travelers are greeted by a traditional warrior challenge.

Today’s Excursion – Circle Island Tour

We explored the churches, maraes, local villages, Ootu Bay, Aitutaki Lagoon, and other beautiful and historic sites during this scenic sightseeing excursion.

Aitutaki, Nikaupara, CICC Church, Reureu Village, Vainamu Well

We departed the pier for the short drive south towards Nikaupara, past the CICC Church, one of the first churches on this island, built by the missionaries. This old limestone church is over 100 years old and lavishly decorated. During a brief stop here, you can take photos inside the building. Leaving the church, re-board your coach for a drive past the village of Reureu and onto the coastal road leading to the Vainamu District. Your narrated drive continues past the freshwater well of Vainamu, where the old people used to wash their clothes and bathe in the early days of the island. This also doubled as a social meeting-place; the men used to search for their brides here, too.

Limestone Churches, Tautu Wharf, Aitutaki Lagoon, Inland Villages, Are Karioi, Copra Plantations

Next, our sightseeing drive passes limestone churches on the way to Tautu. After a photo stop at the old Tautu Wharf for a beautiful view of the Aitutaki Lagoon, head to the village of Vaipae through its entrance, where a huge banyan tree grows over the road, forming an alcove. From here, proceed to a stop at the ancient ceremonial marae of Are Karioi before reaching the inland village of Tautu. Your route continues along the coastal road in the Vaipeka District, past the old Copra Plantations and the island’s only quarry, where volcanic rock is quarried for road maintenance and building.

Ootu Bay, Photo and Refreshment Stop, Aitutaki Village Hotel, Amuri Village

Drive on towards Ootu Bay, where the ancient warrior chief, Ru, first landed on Aitutaki approximately 900 years ago. This scenic viewpoint offers beautiful panoramic views of the island, and those wanting to buy refreshments can do so from the beach restaurant at the Aitutaki Village Hotel. Following a photo and refreshment stop here, commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier via Amuri Village.

Papeete stands at the heart of the tropical paradise known as French Polynesia. It is a vibrant gateway to a world where islands are framed by pristine beaches, shimmering lagoons, and the endless shifting hues of the South Pacific.

As the spirited capital of French Polynesia, Papeete blends urban energy with island charm, making it an ideal starting point for discovering the many wonders of Tahiti. The island itself is a masterpiece of natural beauty: dramatic cliffs and the verdant mountains rise sharply from the coastline, while expansive ocean vistas stretch toward the horizon in the brilliant shades of blue.

A magnificent lagoon encircles much of Tahiti, its crisp, crystal-clear waters inviting you to snorkel among the colorful coral gardens and schools of tropical fish. Among the shores, you’ll find the island’s black-sand beaches – a striking reminder of Tahiti’s volcanic origins – alongside powerful blowholes that thunder with the force of the sea. Inland, lush valleys, cascading waterfalls, and ancient archaeological sites beckon with adventures to explore the island’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

Bora Bora – World Cruise Event not to be missed

Where in the World Are We?

We are in Bora Bora, French Polynesia, which is known as the Honeymoon Paradise

BORA BORA. (SOCIETY ISLANDS), FRENCH POLYNESIA
Exploring Bora Bora’s Hidden Heart
If exploring Bora Bora’s lush interior is more your style, then a circle‑island tour becomes an absolute must.

These guided adventures wind through the island’s emerald heart, taking you past dense tropical forests, dramatic volcanic peaks, and charming local villages that offer a glimpse into everyday life. Many tours include a stop at the legendary celebrity hotspot, Bloody Mary’s Restaurant & Bar, where the sand‑covered floors, towering thatched roof, and fresh‑caught seafood have made it a beloved institution for decades. With its relaxed island vibe and walls lined with the names of famous visitors, it’s one of the most iconic places to soak in Bora Bora’s trademark blend of natural beauty and easygoing charm.

Yet this serene, postcard‑perfect paradise hasn’t always been defined by tranquility. During World War II, Bora Bora played a key role in the Pacific theater when it became a strategic U.S. supply base under the codename Operation Bobcat. At the height of military activity, the island supported nine naval ships, stored more than 20,000 tons of crucial equipment, and was home to nearly 7,000 servicemen. The Americans built roads, wharves, an airstrip, and other infrastructure—some of which helped modernize the island long after the war ended. To defend the lagoon and supply routes, eight massive 7‑inch naval cannons were installed around Bora Bora’s perimeter. Remarkably, all but one of these artillery pieces still stand today, silent reminders of an era that sharply contrasts with the island’s current peaceful reputation.

Today’s Excursion – POLYNESIAN DREAMS – BORA BORA – FRENCH POLYNESIA

As ancient Polynesian explorers traveled from island to island, they brought their songs and stories, as well as their unique culinary specialties. You’ll experience all of this and more as you enjoy a full day of culture and cuisine, culminating in a marvelous sunset at the water’s edge.

Imagine a day unfolding on your own private islet, where a ribbon of white sand slips into the impossible blues of Bora Bora’s lagoon and the world feels blissfully distant. This is Motu Tapu – The Queen’s Scared Island – where time moves to the unhurried rhythm of nature.

You step from your catamaran onto the shore, and you are welcomed with a crown of fresh flowers. The day drifts by in a quiet indulgence: a swim in gin-clear waters, and a gentile breezes rustiling the palms.

The Queen’s arrival signals lunch – a feast of Polynesian flavors served at the water’s edge.

As the light softens and the afternoon wanes, a delicate shell lei is placed in your hands, a simple, shimmering keepsake to remember your day in paradise.

Bora Bora, French Polynesia, Paradise Adventure

Where in the World Are We?

We are in Bora Bora, French Polynesia, in the South Pacific Ocean.

BORA BORA, (SOCIETY ISLANDS), FRENCH POLYNESIA
The Dream Island That Defies Imagination
If you’ve ever imagined your perfect island escape, chances are it resembles something like this: seas the color of liquid sapphire, beaches so white they shimmer beneath the sun, and charming thatched‑roof bungalows perched over calm, crystalline water. Gentle palm trees lean toward the sea as if drawn by the breeze itself, and beneath the surface, schools of brilliant fish dart among coral gardens bursting with life. Yet even with all these postcard‑worthy elements in mind, the first real glimpse of Bora Bora somehow surpasses anything the imagination can conjure.

This tiny tropical jewel—measuring less than 12 square miles, tucked into the heart of the South Pacific—has long claimed its place at the very top of global travel wish lists. For decades, it has held a reputation as the ultimate honeymoon sanctuary, and understandably so; the sunsets alone, drenched in molten gold and watercolor pink, seem crafted specifically for romantic reverie. But Bora Bora offers far more than strolling hand‑in‑hand beneath a sky turning to stardust.

Everywhere you turn, you’re enveloped by the lagoon’s kaleidoscopic hues—turquoise, teal, jade, and deep ultramarine blending together as an artist’s palette spilled across the horizon. And when your eyes have fully soaked in its beauty, adventure patiently waits just below the surface. Underwater scooters glide past coral formations like something out of a futuristic dream, and aqua‑safari excursions invite you to walk along the ocean floor as tropical fish swirl around you in gentle curiosity.

In Bora Bora, serenity and exhilaration coexist effortlessly. It’s a place where nature dazzles at every turn, where time slows, and where even the most vivid daydreams feel modest compared to the real thing.

Today’s Excursion – Off-Road Island Adventure

We discovered Bora Bora, the ‘Pearl of the Pacific’, in an exciting new way during this exhilarating off-road island adventure. In addition to breathtaking panoramic vistas, this 4X4 trip features remnants of early Polynesian life and relics of the World War II presence of American forces.

World War II Cannons

Depart the pier with your driver/guide and follow along a trail to a pair of World War II cannons left by the U.S. military. Along the way, the guide elaborates on the presence of American forces on Bora Bora during World War II.

Faanui Valley, Tropical Flora and Fauna

Next, drive through the Faanui Valley to see the lush tropical nature of the island’s interior. Photo stops en route allow you to take in spectacular vistas and learn about local customs, flora, and fauna.

Fitii District, Pahonu Hill, Blue Lagoon

This scenic journey continues into the northern part of the island and the district of Fitii in the east. Heading toward the south side, the drive takes you past coastal hotels and up Pahonu Hill. Along the way, your guide points out sights of interest and stops are made for photo opportunities of the spectacular lagoon.

RANGIROVA, FRENCH POLYNESIA

Where in the World Are We?

We are sailing from Fakarava to Rangiroa, French Polynesia/

RANGIROA, FRENCH POLYNESIA
French Polynesia’s Immense Sky and Lagoon Paradise
Rangiroa is French Polynesia’s largest atoll.

More than 400 motu (islets) enclose the lagoon, which is so wide and long that one cannot see the southern row of motu from the two main islets in the north – hence the local name Rangiroa, meaning wide or long sky, sometimes taken as ‘immense sky’.

There are several passes from the ocean into the lagoon, and the two main villages of Avatoru and Tiputa are located next to the passes of the same names.

Drift diving and snorkeling the incoming tides, looking for sharks and manta rays at these passes, is one of Rangiroa’s main tourist draws.

Government jobs, ecotourism, and pearl farming are the main sources of income on the atoll.

The lagoon’s calm turquoise waters, rich marine underwater world, and relaxed atmosphere attract visitors year-round to the many local guesthouses and a few hotels.

Both Avatoru and Tiputa also feature schools for the other Tuamotu Islands, which have no higher education possibilities.

One of Rangiroa’s most unusual attractions is the white and rose wine produced on the islet immediately west of Avatoru – the wine has won several awards.

Fakarava Atoll: A Remote Gem in French Polynesia

Where in the World Are We?

We are in Fakarava, French Polynesia.

FAKARAVA, FRENCH POLYNESIA
A UNESCO Biosphere Atoll of Reefs, Passes, and Polynesian History.
Fakarava is oblong-shaped and has an almost continuous string of reef and motu stretching for 25 miles on its eastern edge.

It’s the second largest of the Tuamotu atolls, located 280 miles northeast of Tahiti and 75 miles southeast of Rangiroa.

It’s renowned for the drift diving in its two passes – Garuae (also spelled Ngarue) in the north near the main town of Rotoava (and the airport) and Tamakohua Pass, 30 miles across the lagoon in the south.

The tiny village of Tetamanu, situated by the southern pass, was once the capital of the Tuamotus and houses the first church in the archipelago, built in 1874.

In 2006, the entire atoll was deemed a UNESCO biosphere reserve; to preserve the lagoon, no overwater bungalows have been built in it.

Fakarava was “discovered” by Russian explorer Fabian Gottlieb Von Bellingshausen in 1820; some 20 years later, missionaries arrived, in the guise of fanatical Catholic priest Honore Laval, and began building churches.

Fakarava, also historically known as Havaiki-te-araro, Havai’i, or Farea, is a breathtaking coral atoll in the western Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia. Renowned for its vast lagoon and pristine reefs, Fakarava holds the distinction of being the second-largest atoll in the Tuamotus, making it a standout destination for nature lovers and divers alike.

Where Is Fakarava Located?

Fakarava lies in the western Tuamotu Islands, a remote chain of coral atolls in the South Pacific Ocean. Its nearest neighbor is Toau Atoll, situated approximately 9 miles to the northwest. This isolation has helped preserve Fakarava’s exceptional marine biodiversity and tranquil atmosphere.

Why Fakarava Is Special

  • Size & Scale: As one of the largest Tuamotu atolls, Fakarava features an expansive lagoon surrounded by coral reefs.
  • Marine Biodiversity: The atoll is part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, celebrated for its rich underwater ecosystems.
  • Cultural Heritage: Its multiple traditional names reflect deep Polynesian history and cultural significance.
  • Remote Beauty: Limited development keeps the environment pristine and authentic.
