Where in the World Are We?

We are in Xiamen, China.

COME TO CHINA!
到中國!
Rather than a singular Chinese language, we recognize the existence of several distinct tongues.
Predominantly, there are seven major Chinese languages.
Mandarin boasts an impressive 850 million speakers and serves as the official language of China, Taiwan, and Singapore, primarily flourishing in the northern and northeastern regions of the country.
Wu, with its 77 million speakers, is predominantly found in the vibrant cities of Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang, while Cantonese, spoken by 71 million individuals, thrives in Hong Kong, Macau, and the provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi, extending its reach into various parts of Southeast Asia.
Additionally, the languages of Min, Xiang, Hakka, and Gan collectively account for over 160 million speakers, further enriching the linguistic landscape of this remarkable nation.

Today’s Excursion – UNESCO Charming Island of Gulangyu
We discovered Gulangyu Island’s scenic natural splendor, ancient relics, and stunning architecture.
Xiamen, Ferry-Ride, Gulangyu Island, Ring Road
We embarked on our private ferry boat for the short ride southwest to Gulangyu Island. Renowned for its abundant natural beauty, ancient relics, and European-style architecture, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is also on China’s list of National Scenic Spots and tops the list of the ten most scenic areas in the Fujian Province. Only electric-powered vehicles are permitted on Gulangyu Island, so the environment is filled with fresh air and free from the noise and pollution of combustion engines. Upon arrival, board a private golf cart for a scenic sightseeing drive.
Shuzhuang Garden, Garden of Hiding the Sea, Garden of Making-Up Hill, Panoramic Vistas
Built-in 1931 on the south side of Gulangyu Island, Shuzhuang Garden was formerly a private villa and became a garden park open to the public in 1955. It is divided into Canghaiyuan (Garden of Hiding the Sea) and Bushanyuan (Garden of Making-Up Hill). Shuzhuang Garden was expertly designed to embody three critical characteristics in gardening: hiding elements, borrowing from one’s surroundings, and combining movements. As a result, enjoy an ever-changing panorama of breath-taking panoramic vistas of the sea, bay, reefs, waves, shoreline, nearby islands, Sunlight Rock, and Hero Hill, and climb the Tower of Tide-Viewing for a fantastic view of the sea.
Piano Museum, Gulangyu Pipe Organ Arts Centre, Mini-Concert, Free Time, Ferry-Ride
Next, we visited the Piano Museum, rebuilt from a pavilion in the Shuzhuang Garden. We saw about /30 rare, world-renowned clavichords on display, with exhibits depicting the evolution of pianos and piano-making techniques. Afterward, re-board your golf cart and drive along Ring Road to the Gulangyu Pipe Organ Arts Centre, located on the other side of the island. Upon arrival, enjoy a mini-concert by a local artist performing on the largest pipe organ in Asia.

Wednesday, January 22, 2025 – Photo of the Day – Naha, Okinawa, Japan

Where in the World Are We?
We are in Naha, Okinawa, in the far south of Japan.

NAHA, OKINAWA, JAPAN
The independent kingdom of Ryukyu
Unlike other parts of Japan, Okinawa has a separate history, having been the independent kingdom of Ryukyu during the 15th century. It is located in an ideal area between mainland Japan and Taiwan; the small kingdom prospered and traded goods with Japan, China, Korea, and Southeast Asia.
Subsequently, Okinawa developed its unique history and culture, which is evident today. Naha, the largest city in Okinawa Prefecture, has nearly 6 million visitors from outside of Okinawa Prefecture every year, and it has been one of the most popular destinations in Japan. What makes this city so unique? You are sure to be fascinated by the magnificent Okinawa landscapes while you are in the city.
Remaining the kingdom of Ryukyu is a “must-see,” but you will also learn the history of Okinawa during World War II. Okinawa prefecture has been under American occupation since 1945 and finally returned to Japanese sovereignty in 1972. You could still see the combination of Japanese and American cultures.

OKINAWA FOOD GUIDE
In Okinawa, food is life, and the delicious regional cuisine is one of the secrets to Okinawan longevity. Okinawans use the word nuchigusui to describe their cuisine. It means “medicine of life” and indicates how, for the people of Okinawa, food is more than just sustenance; it nourishes both body and mind. Okinawa is also one of the world’s Blue Zones, an area where people live longer than the average life expectancy, and the islands’ diet is considered a significant contributing factor. Visitors can tour Okinawa through their taste buds, sampling tropical fruits, island vegetables, and local dishes unlike elsewhere in Japan. In doing so, they may discover one of the secrets to Okinawan longevity.
Awamori is the oldest distilled alcoholic drink in Japan and is believed to be the predecessor of shochu (another distilled Japanese spirit). The technique for making awamori is said to have remained unchanged for over 500 years. Indica Thai rice is soaked in water and sprinkled with black koji mold, then fermented with water and yeast before undergoing a single distillation to complete the process.
Today’s Excursion – Naha Sightseeing
We enjoyed a lovely panoramic drive past some critical local landmarks. Okinawa-Honto, the main island, is the largest and most important in the Nansei-Shoto Islands. Its cultural differences with mainland Japan were once evident in its architecture, of which almost all traces were obliterated during World War II. The USA retained control of Okinawa after the war, eventually
handing it back to Japan in 1972. Naha is the capital of Okinawa, where little remains of the old Ryukyu culture.

Sunday, January 19, 2025 – Photo of the Day – Beppu, Japan

Where in the World Are We?
In Beppu, Japan

BEPPU, JAPAN
Hot springs of Beppu, known for its eight scorching “Hells.”
The lantern-lit hot springs of Beppu, known for its eight scorching “Hells,” is a town that’s prettier than a picture. The city is found in a particularly volcanically active part of Japan (hence the abundance of hot springs, or in Japanese, onsens). The viewing pools have evocative names; think Sea Hell, Blood Pond Hell, and Tornado Hell. While the names might seem a little off-putting, the reality is stunning: sulfur-laced air and vast spectrums of blues and reds, depending on the mineralization of the earth. As if the gorgeous palette of colors at the onsen was not enough, Beppu is also world famous for its Sakura, or cherry blossom season. More than 2,000 cherry trees near the base of the ropeway to Mount Tsurumi make for one of Beppu’s most impressive hanami (flower viewing) spots. If not lucky enough to be in the area during Sakura, from May to June, rhododendrons color the mountain.
The view from this 1,375m mountain is beyond impressive, allowing you to see the Kuju Mountains, Chugoku, and Shikoku. If brave enough to climb to the top, the stone Buddhas that were carved into the mountainside during the Heian Period (794-1185) are a worthy reward! As with much of Japan, duality is ever present. Modernity sits very comfortably in ancient buildings. While Beppu’s most significant pull is by far the hot springs and the thermal baths, nearby (10 km), Yufuin has a wealth of art museums, cafes, and boutiques, catering to trendsetters and urbanites alike.
SIGHTS
• Beppu Jigokumeguri
• Stone Buddhas Site
• Usuki Village
• Beppu Hot Springs
• Mount Tsurumi
• Umitamago Aquarium
• Takasaki Monkey Park
• Oita Art Museum
SHOPPING
Beppu’s hot springs generate abundant amounts of water and a lot of steam that can be seen blowing out here and there across the city. People have been harnessing the naturally hot steam for cooking food for centuries. The resulting dishes are called “Hell Steam Cuisine” and are simple and healthy due to the gentle, additive-free cooking method. The naturally mineral-laden steam is also said to bring out the authentic flavors of the food.
Today’s Excursion – Usuki Village & Stone Buddhas
We explored a splendid collection of stone Buddhas and the ruins of a famous castle.
Beppu, Usuki City, Usuki Stone Buddhas, Over 60 Buddha Images
The Usuki Stone Buddhas are Japan’s most famous and most extensive collection. This splendid site features more than 60 images of Buddha, each with its unique expression. They were believed to have been made between the Heian Period (797 A.D.-1192 A.D.) and the Kamakura Period (1192 A.D.-1333 A.D.). These Buddha figures, called Magaibutsu, are carved into the rock and cannot be moved. The Magaibutsu were the first historical artifacts in Kyushu to be designated National Treasures. They have also garnered international recognition due to their beauty and the remarkable carving techniques utilized in their creation despite the solid rock.

Usuki Castle Ruins, Samurai District
We visited the ruins of the Usuki Castle, built by Yoshishige Ootomo in 1562. The castle tower was destroyed in the early Meiji Era. The castle ruins, along with a few buildings and some stone walls, have become a park. Then, we toured the historical Samurai District.

3:30 Destination Lecture with Evelyn Evans – Kagoshima:
This extraordinary port has the active volcanic island of the Sakurajima Bay area, which means that hot springs are plentiful, the views spectacular, and the cedar forests are majestic. From here, visit the samurai village of Chiran, where the
Peace Museum pays homage to the young Kamikaze pilots whose stories it tells.

Dinner tonight was a family-style Italian Dinner with entertainment from the Siver Dawn singers and dancers.

Where in the World Are We?
In Hiroshima, Japan

Miyajima Island & Tori Gate
HIROSHIMA, JAPAN
Commitment to peace
History buffs will want to write home Hiroshima. Despite being devastated in 1945, this Japanese
city is known to all for its commitment to peace – its ruin on the 6th of August 1945 led to the end of
the war, and today, the Peace Memorial (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is a constant reminder of the
destruction that war brings. A walk in the leafy boulevards of Peace Memorial Park brings quiet
contemplation. The Flames of Peace – set in the park’s central feature pond – burn brightly and
will continue to do so until all the nuclear bombs in the world have been destroyed. There are many
other inspiring messages of hope around the city, too; the Children’s Peace Monument just north of
The park is a homage to little Sadako Sasaki, who was just two years old in 1945. When she developed leukemia
in 1956, she believed that she would recover if she folded 1,000 paper cranes – a symbol of longevity and happiness

Displays of models, charred fragments of clothing, melted ceramic tiles, lunch boxes, watches, and
shocking photographs tell Hiroshima’s story of death and destruction. A visit here may be too intense for some (especially children), but to appreciate the horror of the bombing and the hope that made Hiroshima into the city it is today, this museum is highly recommended.
Today’s Excursion – Hiroshima Castle & Garden
We experienced the beauty and tranquillity of an Edo-period castle and Shukkei-en Garden during this panoramic, half-day
sightseeing excursion.
Hiroshima Castle, Central Keep, Museum, Shrine, Ruins, Fortifications, Panoramic City Views
The Hiroshima Castle is an imposing, feudal-era, flatlands fortress built by a powerful Samurai clan in 1589. The castle’s five-story main keep was destroyed by the firestorm following the explosion of the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima at the end of World War II. Reconstructed in 1958, its central keep is now a museum and houses a shrine, ruins, and a section of defensive fortifications. Your approximately 100-step ascent to the top of the castle is rewarded with panoramic views overlooking the city.

Shukkei-en Garden, Miniature Forests, Valleys & Mountain Landscapes, Garden Paths, Pond
Shukkei-en Garden (Shrunk Scenery Garden). As its name implies, the garden offers uniquely beautiful images of miniature natural formations. The Shukkei-en Garden was built after the Hiroshima Castle and dates back to 1620. The charming miniature forests, valleys, and mountain landscapes are refreshing and peaceful. Upon arrival, take a stroll along winding garden paths surrounded by the central pond.

3:30 Destination Lecture with Evelyn Evans – Beppu
The city is home to over 2,000 springs called Onsen, dramatic landscapes and thermal pools, a blue lake, and black beaches where you can be buried in hot, relaxing black sand while enjoying coastal views. There’s more. Historic castles, lush hillsides, and a stellar selection of parks make this a singular experience.

Where in the World Are We?
We are in Osaka, Japan

OSAKA, JAPAN
The culinary capital of Japan
A significant commercial center since medieval times, Osaka and its castle played a substantial role in the history
of Japan and its unification in the 16th century. Built-in 1583, it towers above the city in the heart of a six-hectare
park with ramparts and moats. However, the 5-storey, 8-inside-storey building you can visit today was
completed… in 1997, the castle having been rebuilt many times.
But Osaka also stands out for another aspect: its gastronomy, which for some makes it the capital of taste in a
country where the delicacy of dishes and the marriage of flavors have been elevated to the rank of a significant
art. Regarding Osaka cuisine, three key elements stand out: takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and izakayas. The first
two are eaten, while the third is where you can eat.
Let’s start with takoyaki. These little balls, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, contain pieces of tender
octopus, green onion, and other flavorsome ingredients. Cooked in special molds, takoyaki is served hot
and topped with mayonnaise, takoyaki sauce, dried bonito (katsuobushi), and seaweed.
Let’s continue with okonomiyaki, also known as Japanese pizza. This thick pancake is made from flour, eggs, and cabbage dough. You can add your choice of ingredients, such as prawns, squid, pork, or cheese: it
all depends on your tastes, and okonomiyaki is a 100% customizable dish. Once cooked, okonomiyaki sauce,
mayonnaise, dried bonito, and seaweed are added for an incomparable flavor explosion.
small informal bars, and restaurants all over the city. As well as takoyaki and okonomiyaki, they also
serve sashimi, yakitori (grilled kebabs), and tempura (fried fritters), among other Japanese delicacies.

Osaka has several world-class shopping districts and miles of shopping arcades,
malls, and streets. Osaka’s shopping combines upscale, brand-name, and designer
goods with inexpensive thrift shops and discount chains.
The city’s two largest shopping districts are Umeda in the north and Namba in
the south. JR Osaka Station serves the Umeda area (also known as Kita) and
Umeda Station, while Namba serves the Namba area (also known as Minami)
Station. Both areas have large concentrations of department stores, shopping
arcades, and some of Japan’s most extensive underground shopping malls.
In between Umeda and Namba is the covered shopping arcade Shinsaibashi-suji,
one of Osaka’s oldest and busiest shopping destinations, which runs about 600
meters in length.
Today’s Excursion – The View of Osaka
We experienced the stunning beauty and history of Osaka from two unique perspectives during this
panoramic, half-day sightseeing excursion by visiting the Shitenno-ji Temple and the Umeda Sky Building
The Shitenno-ji Temple was built in the late 6th century by the son of Emperor Yomei.
One of Japan’s oldest temples, Shittenno-ji, was the first to be built by the state and was founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, who supported the introduction of Buddhism into Japan. Whilst several of the temple’s buildings have burned down several times throughout the centuries, they have always been carefully reconstructed to reflect the original, 6th-century design.
Outer Temple Grounds, Interior Tour, Gokuraku-jodo Garden, Pagoda, Main Hall, Kannon Statue.
We took a guided walking tour around the outer temple grounds upon arrival. Once inside the temple,
we saw the Gokuraku-jodo Garden, the pebble-covered courtyard with a five-story pagoda, and the Main
Hall where Prince Shotoku is enshrined as a statue of Kannon.
Umeda Sky Building, 40-storey Towers, Bridges, Escalator, Sky Walk, Panoramic Views Over Osaka
The Umeda Sky Building is among the tallest buildings in Osaka and one of its most recognizable
landmarks. At a height of approximately 567 feet (173 metres), the building consists of two,
40-story towers that connect at their two uppermost stories, with bridges and an escalator for
crossing the vast, atrium-like space in the center. The highlight of your tour is a visit to the
Sky Walk, where you can enjoy spectacular, 360-degree panoramic views overlooking Osaka.
Later, we went to the Osaka Aquarium.

Where in the World Are We?
We are in Osaka, Japan.

OSAKA, JAPAN
The City has thrown off its shackles and stepped out of the shadows
Japan’s third-biggest city has thrown off its shackles and stepped out of the shadows to light up the sky with glaring neon signs and a larger-than-life outlook. Giant octopuses cling to buildings and bustling restaurants pack in the crowds in this tremendous and garish place, Japan’s most friendly, extroverted, and flavourful place. So dive in headfirst to experience an all-out sensory assault of delicious food, shopping cathedrals, and glittering temples. Dotombori Bridge bathes in the multicolored, jewel-like lights of signage-plastered buildings, and the neon lights dance on the canal’s waters below.
Osaka is known as the nation’s kitchen, and the Kuromon Ichiba Market has served as the city’s spot to tuck in for almost 200 years. Full of street food stalls – try pufferfish, savory Okonomiyaki pancakes, or ginger and onion-flavoured octopus among the endless feast of exotic flavors. Osaka Castle is another of the city’s landmarks, built in the 16th century by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. A modern museum now waits inside, where you can learn about the country’s history and why this castle symbolizes Japanese unity. Take the elevator to the observation deck for a panoramic view of Osaka’s spread. A colorful park encloses the castle and blooms with an ocean of pale pink cherry blossoms during the season – the elegant black tiers rising from the pink haze below is one of Osaka’s most alluring visions. Kyoto’s peaceful cultural treasures and temples are also just a short jaunt away on Japan’s sleek trains, should you wish to explore further.

Today’s Excursion – Introduction to Osaka
During this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion, we explored Osaka’s feudal and religious past.
Osaka, Osaka Castle, Weapons, Armour, Artefacts, Panoramic Viewpoint
Osaka Castle was built in the late 16th century; the castle was burned down in a series of 17th-century battles.
It was later reconstructed, but its donjon was again destroyed by fire. The castle’s final reconstruction
took place in the early 20th century. The first seven floors of the castle display various weapons, armor, and artifacts of a bygone era. The eighth floor features splendid panoramic vistas and photo opportunities of the castle’s surroundings.
Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine, Four Sanctuaries, 600 Stone Garden Lanterns, Red, Arched Bridge
Built in the 3rd century, the people of Osaka believed the shrine was the guardian deity for
sailors and a deity to bring prosperity. It also serves as the headquarters of over 2,000 Sumiyoshi
Taisha Shrines throughout Japan. Some three million people visit this shrine at the beginning of
each New Year. The shrine is home to the first-fourth sanctuaries. Each sanctuary is built in the
Sumiyoshi-Zukuri style has straight roofs, is the oldest Shrine architecture style, and is designated National Treasures.
In the precincts surrounded by woods, over 600 stone garden lanterns stand in a row, and a red, arched bridge
spans over the pond.
