TODAY’S WEATHER Mostly Cloudy High: 84°F 29°C Low: 74°F 23°C

Guayaquil is Ecuador’s city with the Midas touch. Politics and culture may center in perpetual rival Quito, but the country’s pocketbook lies here. The city is also one of the world’s premier examples of positive urban renewal. Less than a decade ago, you dared not walk downtown streets at night. But an exceptionally ambitious city government, determined to clean up crime and halt a long downward slide, has transformed the aging port in a few years into Ecuador’s most vibrant city.

Change is everywhere you look here, and some two million proud Guayaquileños have become the ultimate civic boosters. “Have you seen the Malecón?” they ask you, pointing to the riverfront promenade lined with museums, restaurants, shops, and ongoing entertainment. They also tout the new museums, the new airport, and the Metrovía, the new urban transportation network. Guayaquil remains a modern, financially minded city and will never attract the same number of visitors as the capital, but it deserves to be a place of pilgrimage for urban fans everywhere for a reassuring look at what a city can do right.

CUSINE
Ecuador has had a love affair with food dating back as far as the Incas – including these Guagas de Pan prepared for Day of the Dead celebrations. These sweet pastries filled with either jam, caramel, or chocolate are meant to resemble infants tightly wrapped in swaddling clothes.

Our Excursion

Our State Department issued a warning a few days before our cruise advising us not to go on cruises during the pandemic. When we got to Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city, we had our excursion plans changed. The city issued a Red Alert because of a high number of Covid infections. Instead of being able to take our planned excursion, the authorities would only allow us to do a Panoramic Tours where we could not get off the bus. We even had a police escort in front and back to ensure no one got off the bus. These are the highlight pictures from the bus.

WHY IS COMMUNICATION AT SEA DIFFERENT?
Telecommunications via satellite is a significantly different experience compared to high-speed connections onshore. While Silversea uses cutting-edge satellite technology, the provided service does not resemble the high-speed broadband Internet that is available on land.
At sea, the data is transmitted through the air from the ship to a satellite 22,000 miles above the earth. The data then bounces down to an earth routing station, where your request goes out to the world. The response takes the same
22,000-mile route back to return a newsfeed, web page, or email.

The large distance creates a slight time delay or ‘latency,’ which creates a slower loading time for web pages. That is why onboard Internet access is inconsistent and cannot be guaranteed at all times. Satellite communications are also affected by weather and the ship’s location.

Today we had breakfast at Terrazzo Lounge. The different service stations are highlighted below, followed by the menu for the day.

Puerto Quepos in Costa Rica

Quepos is one of Costa Rica’s more developed ports. However, in a country that is known for its miraculous coffee, that does not mean that there is a Starbucks on every corner.

Quepos has managed to preserve “Tico” authenticity. This once small fishing village located 60 km south of San Jose is blessed by nature. Just 7 km from the Manuel Antonio National Park, do not be alarmed if you find yourself chasing electric blue butterflies, extolling the virtues of unmeasurably high waterfalls, and competing with your travel partners to see who has seen the most hummingbirds.

Because that is what Costa Rica’s nature does to you – turns even the most
urban of city dweller into a nature-loving evangelist. As one of the world’s top 12 most beautiful national parks, Manuel Antonio is rich in biodiversity and, despite its small size, is unparalleled with 109 species of mammals and 184 species of birds.

Dating from 1653, the small and busy town is charming and worth a visit if you decide to give the park a miss. Depending on your mood, lovely beaches offer plenty of relaxation or activity. Big game fishing is almost a religion here, and catches of the day include marlin, sailfish, snapper, amberjack, wahoo, dorado, yellowfin, bigeye tuna, and roosterfish. This naturally translates into some of
the best and freshest ceviche you are ever likely to taste.

Our Excursion to Damas Island Mangrove Cruise

The Damas Island mangrove forest is one of the most vital and astounding ecosystems in the world. It is located just 10 minutes from Manuel Antonio is currently one of the most important remaining mangroves in Costa Rica. Covering thousands of acres of protected forest, this amazing biodiversity is home to a large number of birds, reptiles, mammals, and insects. We took an unforgettable boat tour through the channels of the mangrove forest, far away from civilization. We saw white-faced monkeys, anteaters, boas, iguanas, birds, and thousands of colorful crabs.

TODAY’S WEATHER
Mostly Sunny High: 88°F 31°C Low: 74°F 22°C

The mud and soil brought down to the ocean by the Barranca River and the action of some of the smaller rivers to the north
of Puntarenas have led to a tongue of sand known by 1722 as Puerto de Arenas (Harbor of Sands).

Were it not for a very narrow stretch of land known as “La Angostura” the city would be an island.
The city of almost 100,000 inhabitants is the capital of the province of the same name, which hugs
most of Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. Connected by road to San Jose, the country’s capital,
Puntarenas is used by Costa Ricans to cross by ferry over to the Nicoya Peninsula which is part of
the Puntarenas Province and by cruise ships as a gateway to visit the various national parks in the
interior.
Puntarenas still is Costa Rica’s most important fishing port, while cargo is handled some 15
kilometers southwest on the mainland at Puerto Caldera, a port created in the 1980s. To cater to
visitors, the beach area has been remodeled and the Paseo de Los Turistas runs parallel to the
beach with many seafood restaurants, cafes, and bars.

A variety of souvenir stalls and casual restaurants known as kioscos are there to greet cruise
passengers. The kioscos specialty is the Churchill, a bizarre dessert concoction of condensed milk,
syrup and chopped fruit, which got its name in the 1940s from a local who regularly ordered it
and looked like the British prime minister.

Our Excursion

We toured NATUWA Wildlife Sanctuary which provides refuge and protection to the wild animals that have been victimized by human actions, such as hunting, removal from their environments, and deforestation. Many of these homeless animals find the attention they need at the Macaw Sanctuary Natuwa to be able to live in captivity with dignity or find the possibility to return to their natural environments.

PANAMA CANAL TRANSIT
The pilot boarded at 6:00 am and entered the Gatun Lock at 8:00 am. A commentary about the Panama Canal was given by our Enrichment Lecturer Jon Fleming during our transit presenting the history, its engineering accomplishments, economic impact, and future importance. Progress and highlight broadcasts were made on the outside decks, in the Observation Library, and on your television in our suite during the transit.

We went through the old locks completed 108 years ago. The original gates manufactured over a century ago are still in use.
The amazing thing about transiting the canal is the experience of being on a ship as it’s physically lifted up the 85 feet to the central section of the canal, Lake Gatun. This is an aquatic bridge that takes you over the mountains from the Atlantic to the Pacific. There are no pumps involved in the gates – just water power and gravity.

In the evening we had dinner at The Restaurant.

CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA
Cartagena is a city of a thousand stories and more, steeped in a history that invokes admiration.
When it was founded in 1533 by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Heredia, Cartagena was the only port
on the South American mainland.

Cartagena’s magnificent city walls and fortresses, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, enclose a
well-restored historic center (the Cuidad Amurallada, or walled city) with plazas, churches,
museums, and shops that have made it a lively coastal vacation spot for South Americans and others.

New hotels and restaurants make the walled city a desirable place to stay, and the formerly
down-at-the-heels Getsemaní neighborhood attracts those seeking a bohemian buzz. As night falls and
the sun is drunk down by the Caribbean just on the other side of the wall, the city unfurls: the
streets and plazas mill with horse carriages, street musicians, the odd vendor of grilled cheese
arepas; restaurants explode onto the sidewalks; and the city flexes her ever-growing gastronomic bravado.

Today, Cartagena is blooming, open, and in touch with the world more than ever, having been
re-created and reimagined as a city of romance, with polished wooden balconies, ancient brickwork,
and vibrantly colored bougainvillea fleshing out the air that is already thick with the Caribbean climate.

Sandy's Cartagenia Hat
Sandy’s Cartagenia Hat

We went on another 1/2 day trip to see more sights of Old Town Cartagenia and the original fortifications. You just have to look at the amount of work the Spanish put into protecting this colonial gem of a city back in the 17th and 18th centuries, to know that Cartagena was an incredibly valuable possession. The galleons that set sail from here back to Spain would have been full of precious gold and silver that would be worth hundreds of millions of dollars in today’s money – the values of each ship’s treasures are mind-boggling.

That evening the Boutique featured TAG Heuer watches.

For more than 150 years, TAG Heuer has been undaunted in its pursuit of excellence and has continued pushing past the boundaries of ordinary watchmaking to set its own standards. The brand is inspired by legends of sports and entertainment who challenge themselves to perform at their best.
Emulating that determination, TAG Heuer creates such models as Formula 1, which combines the reliability of steel with the chic styling of ceramic and the luxury finish of diamonds.
