Today’s ScheduleOn the Spice Route

This full-day tour provided an excellent introduction to the southern end of Mahe, Seychelles. Golden beaches stretch beneath spectacular granite peaks covered in dense tropical vegetation from which there are breathtaking views over turquoise seas. The tour began with a guided visit to Victoria the world’s smallest capital. From the antique clock tower and the modern National Library Building to the bustling market Victoria possesses a special charm. We explored the town with time for shopping before going to the Botanical Gardens.

Botanical Gardens

At the southern edge of Victoria lie some lovely gardens that are protected from development by their status as a national monument. Our guide showed you a delightful variety of rare and colorful plants including the endemic coco de mare. Next we drove up Bel Eau Road for an excellent panoramic view of Victoria, including the port, yacht basin, and the main buildings of the capital.

Mission Lodge Ruins

After driving up the spectacular Sans Souci Road where we saw some of the island’s cinnamon plantations and arrived at the Mission Lodge. Originally known as Venn’s Town the site was established as a school for children of freed slaves. Ruins blanketed with tropical greenery and a magnificent avenue of endemic trees are the only reminders of the school.

From here a short drive brought us to a local Tea Factory for refreshments. We continued the scenic drive along lower Sans Souci Road with views of mountain slopes covered with tea shrubs. Our sightseeing drive continued through picturesque fishing villages to the Hilton Allamanda Restaurant where we savored a delicious Creole lunch featuring local specialties served by the beach.

Eden Island
On our return we stopped by Eden Island which was entirely made from reclaimed sea beds. It reminded us of a small version of Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, UAE. The island was created artificially during the 2000s. It belongs to the Mahe Port Islands, which are mostly artificial islands created by funds from Dubai when the Dubai dredger was placed in Seychelles. It was invested and built by the King of the United Arab Emirates. The island is home to a group of wealthy villas and supporting business districts, restaurants and a shopping mall. The luxury marina is full of large yachts and is now a yacht club.

MAHE, SEYCHELLES – LARGEST ISLAND OF THE SEYCHELLES
Few places on Earth can claim to have been as blessed by nature as Mahe. Set in the remote Seychelles archipelago over 1,500 kilometres east of Mombasa, Mahe is largest of the 115 islands and is home to so many stunning attractions you won’t know where to begin.

For many the Seychelles are the destination of a lifetime. Cerulean seas, miles and miles of beach, lush, tropical jungle and surreal, natural beauty as far as the eye can see.

Not only does Mahe boast 68 pristine beaches, it is dominated by the towering peaks of the Morne Seychellois National Park. This splendid National Park takes up over 20% of the island and is home to a vast amount of endemic flora and fauna, including the ultrarare Seychelles Scops-owl.

Unsurprisingly, the crystal clear waters are a diver’s heaven, promising a colourful cornucopia of underwater life, regardless of how experienced you are.
Despite the island being visited in 1609 by the British, Mahe did not feature on any maps until 1742, when Frenchman Lazare Picault explored the as yet unnamed islands. However, it took a further 14 years for the French to lay claim to the islands, with the arrival of naval ship Le Cerf, captained by Corneille Morphey who christened the archipelago after Vicomte Moreau de Sechelles. He did this by setting down a Stone of Possession, which is on display in the National Museum.

The first settlers arrived in 1770 and 15 years later the population had swelled to 130 – 7 Europeans and 123 slaves. Today, there are 80,000 Seychellois.

BOTANICAL GARDENS
At the southern edge of Victoria, the Botanical Gardens host some of the most representative species of local flora and fauna. You will also have a chance to see the colony of giant tortoises, a rare species of fruit bat and the Coco-demer, the largest seed in the world, and one of the symbols of the Seychelles.

Today’s Schedule – A Moment in Time Excursion

Today we enjoyed the highlights of one of the world’s smallest capitals. Our tour began with the drive past Independence House which adjoins a large roundabout. A winged sculpture to commemorate Victoria’s bicentennial 1770-1970 is in the center. The town’s central point is the silver-coloured clock tower erected in 1903 as a replica of the tower at London’s Vauxhall Bridge. Around the clock tower cluster bank buildings, the colonial-style law courts, and the Anglican Cathedral. We passed the National Museum constructed in 1911 with an endowment from the British-born steel magnate Andrew Carnegie. After driving up the spectacular Sans Souci Road we discover some of the island’s cinnamon plantations.

Mission Lodge Ruins

Originally known as Venn’s Town the site was established as a school for children of freed slaves. Ruins blanketed with tropical greenery and a magnificent avenue of endemic trees are the only reminders of the school. While the children received a basic education the adults worked as labourers in the surrounding plantations. A brief walk through exotic trees with massive roots and forest like environment was a beautiful setting. At the end of the gathering were lookout points with visas of the island below. One notable lookout was built for Queen Elizabth’s visit in 1972. Afterwards a short drive brought us to the Tea Tavern where refreshments are served overlooking the mountainside tea plantation. We continued the scenic drive along lower Sans Souci Road with views of mountain slopes covered with tea shrubs and the ocean in the background. We pass through the coastal villages of Port Glaud and Grand Anse on the south coast and traveled through dense vegetation of the La Misère Mountain Pass enjoying more spectacular views of Victoria and the inner islands.

Botanical Gardens

On the return trip we visit these lovely gardens located at the southern edge of Victoria. The gardens are protected from development by their status as a national monument. Our guide showed us a remarkable variety of rare and colourful plants including the endemic coco de mar as well as giant land tortoises and fruit bats.

La Anse Source d’Argent Beach, La Digue Island, Seychelles

LA DIGUE, SEYCHELLES – ONE OF THE SEYCHELLES’ PRETTIEST ISLANDS
Urbanites look away. You’ll find no bright lights or big cities here. The attraction of La Digue is that there are no none. Instead, it’s just long ribbons of perfect beach, lush inland forests, and enough kaleidoscopic coral reef to make any diver weak at the knees.

Because of La Digue’s proximity to both Praslin and Mahe, it is considered part of the holy trinity of Seychelles. But that is not to say that it’s a hot spot. On the contrary, life is taken at a slow pace here – transport is by bicycle or golf cart. Entertainment is a slow walk on paths shaded by tropical flowers, and life hums to the rhythm of bygone days. That is the true attraction of La Digue the very other wordiness of the island; the feeling that nothing has changed since the 18th century. In fact, some of the residents (called Digueois) still carry the names of their forefathers, who arrived as slaves with the French colonialists in 1789.

The island’s beaches are, of course, legendary. The jewel in La Digue’s crown (and there are so many) would have to be La Anse Source d’Argent, frequently considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the planet. This is truly the Holy Grail – a long string of powdery, white sand, bordered by the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Scattered around the beach and shore are smooth granite boulders that form coves and caves and provide a home for some of the most colorful underwater life you’re ever likely to see.

COCO ISLAND
The island is merely a small granitic outcrop with a few palm trees, but its real treasure lies in the depths around. Often compared to a living aquarium, the site attracts numerous fish species floating to the surface to feed – a unique underwater paradise.

Morning Excursion – Journey Back In Time

We were captivated by La Digue one of the Seychelles’ prettiest islands.

We traveled via the ship’s tenders to La Digue jetty and arrival at La Passe Harbour on La Digue. Our tour began with a short ride to l’Union Estate for a glimpse of bygone days of plantation life en route ride through the picturesque village of La Passe. It was a relaxed scene with people meandering around its quiet interlocking paver street on bicycles with a backdrop of lush green hills and turquoise seas.

L’Union Estate
Visinting the plantation was a journey back in time. We visit a traditional coconut oil mill, a copra kiln and the plantation house. Then walked to a preserve for giant tortoises and enjoy seeing these magnificent creatures amble along. It was fun feeding them with nearby green shoots and seeing their powerful jaws work. We learned males have humped pod shells while female have smooth pod shells. There legs end with giant claws. These somewhat tamed tortoise liked to be petted on their head and necks. The texture of the skin was soft like an old wrinkled leather chair.

Anse Source d’Argent

The Anse Source d’Argent is a magnificent palm lined beach with soft white sand and dramatic granite boulders. It reminded us of The Rock on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. The large granite boulders reach down to the sand and sea water with shallow coral reefs just a few feet away. We had refreshments on the beach and ventured into the water to our knees.

Our Afternoon Excursion – Praslin, Seychelles – Valle De Mai excursion

In the afternoon our ship called in at the slightly more developed island of Praslin famous for being one of only two islands where the extremely rare coco de mer grows. It features a suggestively shaped anotomical nuts, use your imagination or see examples below, that has all kinds of legends attached to it most of them relate to sex.
The excursion was to the unspoilt Vallee de Mai a forest that’s home to thousands of swaying coco de mer trees and other prehistoric-looking flora with huge leaves and weird shapes. In this quiet forest, where the only sounds were creaking branches, rustling leaves and cooing birds, a true Garden of Eden.

The Silver Whisperer hosted a “Dinner Under The Stars” outdoor on the Pool Deck. It featured large buffet selection of salads, appetizers, vegetables, main courses, and desserts. The Voices of Silverseas provided the entertainment then followed by dancing.

Today’s Schedule – Maharubi Palace Ruins & Spice Plantation

Taking a spice tour in Zanzibar provides a good way to understand why Zanzibar and spices are synonymous. In the 19th century, the Sultan of Oman introduced cloves to the island, which today is Zanzibar’s main export product.

We departed from the pier and drive past the house of Dr. David Livingstone where he stayed while planning his explorations into the interior.

We visited the ruins of Maruhubi Palace built by Sultan Barghash the third Arab sultan of Zanzibar who used the building to accommodate his wife and concubines. The sultan himself lived in a separate palace in Zanzibar Town. In 1899 the Maruhubi Palace was destroyed by a fire leaving only a few remains including some massive stone columns which supported a large wooden balcony that surrounded the upper floor.

We walked a few hundred yards to a seaside beach filled with deteriorated boats waiting for hand restoration. It was fascinating to see shipbuilding and restoration techniques from centuries past.

We proceed to the countryside where we toured a spice plantation to see spice plants for us to smell, taste, touch, and see. We saw products you normally buy in packets or jars in supermarkets look and taste like fresh off the plant. The great variety of spices and plants grown here is used in food flavoring and preparation, cosmetics, dyes, and traditional medicines.

A local boy climbed up a tall coconut tree while you are walking through the spice area to reach those plants situated high off the ground as he then uses his legs to shimmy back down the swaying palm. Spice packets were available for sale on the rustic tables.

Sultan’s Palace

Today’s Schedule – Zanzibar Insight featuring Professional Photographer Javed Jafferji

Zanzibar is not only about pristine beaches washed by gentle ocean in all shades of blue. The beauty of the archipelago lies also in is people and their culture. Music in Zanzibar is a living tradition, telling stories of the past days and present.

Dhow Countries Music Academy

We started our day with a short drive to visit the Dhow Countries Music Academy which is the only music school on the island. Particular emphasis was being placed on teaching traditional music styles, such as taarab, kidumbak and ngoma. They promote and preserve the islands’ musical traditions of the Swahili Coast along the Indian Ocean. We saw several performers practicing and classes going on at the time of the visit.

Waterfront Forodhani Gardens

From the Music Academy Centre we proceeded with a short walk to the waterfront Forodhani gardens where we paused for photos. We saw the House of Wonder building which is currently under renovations as well at the Palace museum which was the Sultans residence where are despayed the collection of portraits of past sultans and relics of early explorers including Dr. Livingstone’s medicine chest are found therein.

Old Fort

Another short walk took us to the old fort known as ‘Ngome Kongwe’ in Swahili. It was built by Omani Arabs after expelling the Portuguese in 1699 and used as a garrison and prison in the 19th century and as a terminal of the Zanzibar railways. Its courtyard has been adapted to serve as a cultural centre with curio shops selling tourist-oriented merchandise such as ‘tinga tinga’ paintings. We spend time browsing for the unique pieces of art. A Heena art gallery displayed the centuries old tradition of adorning women’s hands and feet for celebrations such as weddings and festivals. The artists translate the patterns of the body art onto canvas creating a new and soon to be iconic art style through their elaborate paintings. ‘The old fort’ It is also has an open-air stone amphitheater where live dance and music shows are held most evenings. It is also the main venue used for large events such as the Festival of the Dhow Countries also known as the Zanzibar International Film Festival and the Sauti za Busara, one of Africa’s top music festivals which takes place in Zanzibar every year normally based on celebrating cultural diversity and live performance.

Freddy Mercury Museum and Javed Jafferji

On our visit to the Freddy Mercury Museum we met Javed Jafferji a professional photographer who has captured images of Zanzibar and has published over 90 coffee table books. Javed will present us with an autographed book to remember and cherish your visit to Zanzibar. He has received the Almanacs Top 100 Africans of 2000 for his work in promoting Africa worldwide and is also an award-winning filmmaker.

We concluded our tour by enjoying a cup of spiced tea and refreshments in a nearby rooftop restaurant with wonderful views.

ZANZIBAR, TANZANIA – A MELTING POT OF ARABIC, AFRICAN AND EUROPEAN HISTORY
A tropical paradise, with swathes of long white sand and flanked by tall, skinny, palm trees, Zanzibar sits in the clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Part of the Zanzibar archipelago, the island – also confusingly called Zanzibar – is found just 22 miles from
mainland Tanzania.
Considered today as a honeymooners’ paradise, visitors will find vestiges of both Arabic and Portuguese colonialism (the island was Portuguese until 1698 when it was seized by the Sultanate of Oman), amid the picture-perfect landscape.

But there is much more to Zanzibar than meets the eye. With just one step off the ship, you are already breathing the heady scents of nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, and cloves. Rightfully known as the Spice Isle, Zanzibar was once a trading hotspot on the trading route from Arabia to Africa. At the time, the island enjoyed an influx of wealth and European bourgeoisie, with
spices being traded at astronomical prices.
The influences of the various colonies are glamorously reflected in the main city’s architecture. But sensual smells and beautiful beaches aside, Zanzibar has the vestiges of sinister history. The island was a capital for the slave trade in the 19th century, with an estimated 50,000 slaves passing through the Zanzibar slave market each year, with many more dying en route. The epicenter for trade was in the Market Square, in the heart of Stone Town, a melting pot of Arabic, African and European history that today is one of the world’s most popular UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
MARUHUBI PALACE RUINS
The Maruhubi Palace, located on the coast, about 4km north of Stone Town Zanzibar, was built in 1882 for Sultan Said Barghash as a harem to accommodate his concubines while he lived at the palace in Zanzibar Town. In 1899 the Maruhubi Palace was destroyed by a fire, leaving only a few remains, including some massive stone columns which supported a large wooden balcony that surrounded the upper floor.

Today’s Excursion Stone Town – A UNESCO’s World Heritage Site

Discover the highlights of Stone Town a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Zanzibar’s major port, and town. Our introduction began with a visit to the city Market where we experienced the hustle and bustle of morning activities. We saw and smelled the tropical fruits piled high and the freshly ground spices neatly packed for sale.

We proceeded to the Anglican Church built in 1874 by Bishop Steer on the site of the Great Slave Market, once the hub of the slave trade for the whole of East Africa. At its peak, up to 60,000 slaves passed through the market each year. We visited the underground chambers where the slaves were held before being taken to the market. It showed the horrible conditions used during this time.

We proceeded to the Sultan Palace Museum which was the Sultan’s residence. During our visit, we viewed a collection of portraits of past sultans and relics of early explorers, including Dr. Livingstone’s medicine chest.

The Old Fort overlooked a small square and the ocean. The fort was established by the Portuguese as a trading depot in the 16th century. It has been recently restored and now houses a number of craft and souvenir shops around the inner courtyard. From the fort, our guide leads us on a short walking tour through the narrow alleys that lead to the heart of Stone Town, passing the Roman Catholic Church, some extraordinary Zanzibar doors, and glimpses of typical Zanzibar life. One of the highlights was to Freddie Mercury House.
