MOSSEL BAY IS A CHARMING VILLAGE ON THE GARDEN ROUTE IN SOUTH AFRICA
Halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth lies the sunny, shallow waters of Mossel Bay.
As you sink your toes into the pristine sands of Santos beach and watch the warm waters of the Indian Ocean lap the shore, the only decision to make is just how active you want to be.
For the adventurous the list is longer than your adrenalin supply, from shark cage diving, wreck diving surfing and snorkeling, bungee jumping to skydiving. Around the Point, the rocky tip of the peninsular, there are some top surfing spots.
To unwind and relax explore the golden sandy coast that’s stretches for over 60kms, refresh yourself with a swim in the clear blue ocean or at low tide try the wide natural rock pool, complete with a diving board on the Point. Stretch your legs on the St Blaize trail on a visit the old lighthouse which gives stupendous views of the bay.
Mossel Bay has a fascinating history, learn about the emergence of the earliest humans, which happened here some 164,000 years ago at the Point of Human Origins archeological site. The Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex centers on modern history, the exploits of Portuguese explorer Bartolmeu Dias, who landed in and named the bay in 1488 while looking for India. Seeing an exact replica of the tiny boat that Dias sailed in makes you realise what an adrenalin junkie he must have been. Outside the museum, find the Post Office Tree, South Africa’s very first post office that’s functioned one way or another since 1500, where you can still send a postcard or two.
SIGHTS
• Dias Museum complex

BOTLIERSKOP PRIVATE GAME RESERVE
Botlierskop is a well-stocked, free roaming private game reserve, which provides visitors with the opportunity to view
African wildlife in its natural habitat, from the safety and comfort of 4×4 open vehicles.
There are currently 26 animal species and more than 1,800 animals in total on the 3,000 ha reserve.
Our Morning Excursion
We began our morning excursion at 8:00 AM to the Scenic Mountain Passes by driving from Mossel Bay to the town of Oudtshoorn via the stunning Robinson Pass with its desert-like arid climate and breath-taking scenery.

We reached Oudtshoorn the principal town of the Little Karoo. The Klein Karoo is an oasis-like setting in a fertile valley cupped by the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges and originated as a settlement along the Grobbelaars River which meanders southwards form the Swartberg, providing fertile soil and water for irrigation. Crops such as lucerne, fruit, grapes and grains grow here in abundance.
Oudthsoorn is the “Ostrich capital of the world”. Two ostrich-feather booms during 1865-1870 and 1900-1914 truly established the settlement. It has approximately 60,000 inhabitants and is the largest town in the Little Karoo region. Oudtshoorn is home to the world’s largest ostrich population.
The Queen’s Hotel is the third oldest hotel in South Africa. It was built in 1880. The hotel was visited 1947 by the British Royal Family (Princess Elizabeth & Prince Phillip) on their trip to the, then, Union of South Africa
We headed back to Mossel Bay down the scenic Outeniqua Pass which was constructed between 1943 and 1951 replacing the Montagu Pass as the main route from George into the interior. It was named after the Khoi tribe who formerly lived there.
As we make our way down the pass, the sun-scorched plains of the Little Karoo disappear and the Landscape gives way to the delightful shade and greenery of the lush Garden Route forests. Driving from George to Mossel bay we enjoyed the stunning panoramic views of the famous Garden Route. We returned to the pier in Mossel Bay.

Stellenbosch & Waterford Wine Tasting – Our morning excursion
We departed the pier and traveled for approximately one hour drive to Stellenbosch. Named after its founder, Governor Simon van der Stel who discovered the broad fertile valley of the Eerste River in 1680, today Stellenbosch is a major university town, characterized by Cape Dutch-style architecture and streets lined with oak trees, some of which have been declared national monuments. We enjoyed a brief orientation drive through Stellenbosch followed by time at leisure to explore the town. We visited the Stellenbosch Museum which comprises four different houses depicting different eras – Schreuder House, 1709; Bletterman House, 1788; Grosvenor House, 1800 to 1830 and the OM Bergh House, 1850.

Following leisurely time in this quaint university town, we embarked on a short transfer to Waterford Wine Estate. We had a curated guided tour of the Estate and enjoyed a premium wine tasting paired with SALT snacks and chocolate. SALT restaurant is run by Craig Cormack and Beau Du Toit and they have designed a SALT Tasting menu to perfectly compliment Waterford’s wines.

That evening we had dinner on board our Sliver Whisper ship at The Restaurant

Today’s Schedule
Belmond Mount Nelson High Tea & Diamond Dazzle – Morning Excursion
We had a 30-minute scenic drive through the city center passing the houses of Parliament and exclusive neighborhoods along the way. Our destination was the imposing entrance to the Mount Nelson Hotel where we were invited into the elegant lounge and terraced gardens to relax in comfort and style enjoying a formal High Tea Experience.

The Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel is the most iconic luxury hotel in Cape Town situated within a sprawling lush garden estate in the heart of the city’s vibrant cultural center. Accompanied by the sound of classical piano music we sampled the many delicacies from the High Tea buffet. We were enjoying the elegant atmosphere of yesteryear.
Afterward, we continued our tour to the Shimansky Diamond Factory Shop. We had a 45-minute tour with a viewing of the cutting, polishing, and jewelry factory in action. The tour included a secret chamber room where we touched and felt the rough rocks, and saw replicas of the world’s most famous diamonds.

Tale of Tales Event – OPERA IN THE QUARRY – Evening Excursion
Tonight we were treated to another World Cruise Event at a world-famous wine estate located in an old abandoned quarry. The Hillcrest Wine Estate and quarry had been transformed into a magical one-night open-air tent venue for dining and opera. We were greeted at the shore terminal by a group of youth violinists. After the bus ride to the estate, there were three puppet elephants to welcome and entertain us. The life-size puppets are the creation of Cape Town’s Handspring Puppet Company. They were so realistic from a distance we felt they were real. As we got closer we saw they were life-size puppets brought to life by the performers inside. They starred in “War Horse”, the famed play at London’s National Theater in 2007.
The tent was on a massive platform with clear ceilings and open sides and hundreds of chandeliers. We could see the open skies when we arrived, but after dark, the venue was magically transformed. The dinner 5-course meal was served with wine pairings for each course.
The highlight of the evening was South Africa’s brightest and most talented stars, whose soaring arias, duets, and choral arrangements filled this grand acoustical space with beauty while capturing our hearts along the way. They got and deserved a standing ovation.

Cape Town, South Africa Overview
One of the most beautiful cities in the world is Cape Town, South Africa. Along its coastline are brilliant blue waters and stunning mountain scenery that you can explore at your leisure or spend days relaxing on sandy beaches with an ocean view cocktail!
A blend of spectacular natural beauty together with vibrant culture makes this destination truly unforgettable. Whether it’s touring wineries tasting different wines while also taking time out for shopping between tours, going to museums exploring how people lived back when it was still part Dutch colony, or enjoying some seafood feeds along with cervical townships like Fish Hoek & Camps Bay.
The cable car lifts passengers to the top of Table Mountain where they can see another perspective that’s not possible elsewhere. The 360-degree view from 3,563’ is of the best world views we visited.
The adjacent view from Lion’s Head peak which is the top of a popular hiking trail offers breathtaking sunrises. A sharp hike and early start time are both necessary but worth every second when you get to enjoy Cape Town’s natural beauty during such a rewarding moment in life.
This cool water from Table Mountain has upsides like the fact that it’s been known to bring a colony of adorably cute African penguins. The nearby journey to the Cape of Good Hope hosts these tiny penguins. The Cape is where you can stand watching over merging waves from both Atlantic and Indian Oceans!
As a living history lesson, you can sail in the ships that transported prisoners out to Robben Island. A former prisoner tells of the traumas of life in this offshore prison. Your guide will show you the cramped cells and render Nelson Mandela’s long walk to freedom in visceral clarity.
Today’s Schedule
Sunrise and entering Cape Town between 6 AM and 8 AM.
We enjoyed a magnificent sunrise before getting to Cape Town with our Expedition Guides Rob Caskie and Bruno Carzani.

The by-sea entrance to Cape Town with Table Mountain in the background can only be rivaled by Sydney & the Opera House.

Morning Tour of Table Mountain

Our morning excursion was to Table Mountain via a bus to the base and then a 4-minute cable car ride to the top. Sandy & I visited in 2002. In the last 20 years, we noticed 2 major upgrades. First, the cable car has been expanded from 4 – 6 people to 20+. This was our first cable car that had a revolving floor during the 4-minute ascent. Each person had an opportunity for a great photo thru the two open portals. In 20 years, the trails above have been upgraded from a basic hiking trail to 8 – 10′ wide concrete paths with great signage.

Late afternoon tour of Cape Town’s eastern seaside suburbs
We departed the pier and pass by the Cape Town Fifa World Cup Stadium towards Sea Point.
The promenade of Sea Point, which stretches to Mouille Point is also very popular. It is a jogger’s mile and many people meet here for a walk and a talk. The beaches in Sea Point are not very good for swimming. The surf is too powerful and the coast too rocky. But there is the huge seawater swimming pool. The neighboring suburb of Green Point is famous for its big Sunday market; a flea market with thousands of stalls around the stadium.
Clifton beach has something of a reputation with the trendy set in Cape Town and is a haven for international jet setters. Together with its immaculate white sands and glistening water, their bronzing bodies and designer sunglasses grace Clifton’s 4th beach with sufficient glamour and eco-savvy to deserve not only the ‘see and be seen’ status it has acquired but its blue flag status as well.
We stopped at the Maidens Cove parking area between Camps Bay and Clifton and near the Glen Country Club. Looking up at the cableway station you will see the narrowest view of Table Mountain that can be seen from anywhere in Cape Town.
On our return to Cape Town harbor, we stopped off at Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront to enjoy a pre-dinner drink & canapés. Afterward, we returned to the ship.

Marcel Lichtenstein, Biologist and Astronomer
Hailing from the Costa Rican countryside, Marcel was raised in a multilingual family of professors, photographers, and naturalists. At a young age, he became fascinated by all aspects of tropical and subtropical ecosystems and he continues to photograph these environments today.
For more than 25 years Marcel worked as a cultural and naturalist guide in Costa Rica, where he’s spent more than 4,000 hours leading tours on the Rainforest Aerial Tram.
Since 1997 his conservation efforts through his own company, Bosque Protegido, helped preserve 65 hectares of forest next to the Braulio Carrillo national park. Additionally, Jungle Jewels, his high-quality native jewelry outfit, donates 30 percent of its profits to purchase rainforest for conservation purposes.
Marcel’s profound passion for nature stimulated his studies in photography, astronomy, botany, ornithology, marine ecology, and natural history. Whether it’s presenting an evening stargazing experience or a knot demonstration, Marcel has led expedition tours in 27 countries of Europe, South, and Central America, as well as in the Caribbean and even Antarctica.

9:45 Showtime! Tenor Shimi Goodman and Piano Showman Chris Hamilton: “Tiano”.
After 5 days of rough sailing, we were delighted to arrive at Tristian de Cunha on a bright sunny day with calm seas. Tristan has no Covid cases so were not able to go ashore. We were able to take Zodiacs to see the Penguins and Seals on Nightingale Island. (See map above). Next, we were able to navigate around Tristan de Cunha to see the tiny, quaint settlement of 241 inhabitants called Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. More about that later, enjoy the pictures now.

200,000 pairs lived up to their name as they hopped up to cliff face with remarkable agility for creatures that look so ungainly. They shared the amazing volcanic formations that form the island with 20,000 fur seals. Both slipped in and out of the water easily. On this gorgeous morning were so many birds swooping around: gulls, terns, petrels, skuas, most important 20,000 pairs of albatrosses.
The trip from our ship was on calm seas, but the trip back was rocky but not bad. Reboarding was rougher as our Zodiac had to make 2 – 3 passes to finally get lashed up to the embarkation deck. Getting off the Zodiac was a challenge since the swells were 4 – 5 feet. We had to time our step to the top of the Zodiac, then we had to time our step to the boarding steps with the unpredictable swells. Fortunately, there were 4 crew members, 2 on the Zodiac to grab our life vest back strap and hold our forearms to stabilize us, and 2 onboard to grab each of our forearms in a “Sailor’s Handshake” to help us step safely aboard. Then we went through the biosecurity checks and ID check-in.

The only tine portion of land that’s habitable is a tiny village named “Edinburgh of the Seven Seas”. It is a scattering of metal and stone houses and included a school, churches, a hospital, administrative, and fish processing buildings. To the East was a pasture with cows dotted on the grass and a small area of allotments called Potato Patches. Potatoes were once the national currency since early citizens felt you would never starve if you had a reliable supply of potatoes. When our Captain sounded our ship’s horn the school children ran outside to wave at us in the distance as if to say “Please rescue us”. The cattle that were previously scatted like dots on the east hillside ran frightened to the northern fences to escape the ship’s horn as if to be protected. Although we wished we could have come ashore and said hello, we enjoyed views that very few people on this planet see.

BIRD MIGRATION FACTS
At least 4,000 species of bird are regular migrants, which is about 40 percent of the total number of birds in the world.
Birds can reach great heights as they migrate. Bar-headed geese are the highest-flying migratory birds, regularly reaching altitudes of up to five and a half miles above sea level while flying over the Himalayas in India.
The Arctic tern has the longest migration of any bird in the world. These black-capped, red-billed birds can fly more than 49,700 miles in a year, making a round trip between their breeding grounds in the Arctic and the Antarctic, where they spend their winters. The lucky bird gets to see two summers a year! And over its lifespan of more than 30 years, the flights
can add up to the equivalent of three trips to the moon and back.
The award for fastest bird goes to the great snipe: It flies around 4,200 miles at speeds of up to 60mph! No other animal travels at such speeds for such long distances.
