Where in the World Are We?

We are in Isafjordur, in northeast Iceland.

Today’s Excursion – Life & Culture
We explored the traditional culture and lifestyle on the western fjords of Iceland during this tour of Ísafjörður and its surroundings.

Bolungarvik, Holskirkja Church

Bolungarvik is a village located on a picturesque bay surrounded by steep mountains. The Holskirkja Church, built in 1908, contains several interesting pieces. Among them are two grand church bells, meant to drive away phantoms that were believed to reside on the heath. We enjoyed hearing several local songs sung to us at the church.

Maritime Museum
The Maritime Museum is situated in one of the oldest houses in Ísafjörður and three other well-preserved historic homes, all circa 1780. Typical Icelandic refreshments include schnapps, dried fish, and shark (preserved Icelandic-style).
