Where in the World Are We?

We are in Nuuk, Greenland, the capital of Greenland.

NUUK (GODTHAB), GREENLAND
Greenland’s economic and social hub
In the bustling capital city of Greenland, you could be forgiven for forgetting you are in such a vast and isolated country. Nuuk is Greenland’s economic and social hub, home to more than a third of Greenland’s population, and although it feels like a world capital, scratch the surface. A uniquely Greenlandic character can be found underneath.

Nuuk Cathedral overlooks the gorgeous old Colonial Harbour district and the Greenland National Museum, resting place of the legendary Qilakitsoq mummies, the true highlight of the museum’s archaeological collection. Above the Colonial Harbour sits downtown Nuuk, with lines of Scandistyle apartments, a bustling shopping district, the Greenlandic Parliament, Nuuk City Hall (which welcomes visitors to see its artwork), and even outdoor cafes selling locally produced food and beer. These nods to modernity compete for space with local artisan boutiques, the meat market selling the catch from Nuuk’s vast fjord-lands, and the stunning Katuaq Cultural Centre, where blockbuster movies, as well as local and foreign performers, entertain the people of Nuuk.

Although Nuuk has long been a melting pot of Danish and Greenlandic ideas, this is a city where Greenland displays its sophistication, with the Country’s only traffic lights, roundabouts, and University. Most of all, expect to find many friendly people who are proud of who they are, and equally proud of the city they call home.

CUISINE
Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, offers a unique culinary experience that blends traditional Greenlandic dishes with modern influences. Local cuisine features fresh seafood like halibut, cod, and shrimp, often served grilled, smoked, or in traditional dishes like “suaasat” (a hearty fish or seal broth). Traditional specialties include “mattak” (whale skin with blubber), musk ox, and reindeer meat, often served with potatoes and vegetables. Modern Nuuk restaurants also serve international cuisine, including Asian and European dishes, often incorporating local ingredients. Visitors can enjoy these flavors at local eateries, cafes, and restaurants, experiencing the city’s cultural heritage through its food.

Today’s Excursion – Nuuk On Foot

We begin at Katuaq Cultural Center, a Greenlandic art and culture hub. Stroll through Nuuk’s historic quarter,
passing the Parliament House, where Greenland’s self-governance is exercised. Explore the open-air market, Kalaaliaraq,
where vendors sell fresh local produce. Visit the Nuuk Cathedral, a red wooden church dating back to 1849. At the
old Colonial Harbour, discover Hans Egede’s House, the oldest Greenland building constructed in 1721. Conclude at the
The Greenland National Museum, home to the Qilakitsoq mummies, offers insights into Inuit and Norse history.

Island Cruise
We embarked on a leisurely boat tour through Nuuk’s pristine wilderness, navigating the intricate waterways of the world’s second-largest fjord system, Nuup Kangerlua. As we cruise gently, we immerse ourselves in the serene beauty of towering
mountains, cascading waterfalls, and glistening icebergs. This region is home to diverse wildlife; keep an eye out for seals
lounging on ice floes, seabirds soaring overhead, and, with a bit of luck, majestic whales breaching the surface. The boat offers
comfortable indoor seating, but stepping onto the open deck provides an unparalleled connection to the surrounding nature,
allowing you to fully appreciate the untouched landscapes that define Greenland’s capital. This tour was perfect for those
seeking a tranquil escape into the heart of Arctic beauty.
