Where in the World Are We?

We are in Evora, Portugal.

Évora is the capital of Portugal’s south-central Alentejo region. In the city’s historic center stands the ancient Roman Temple of Évora (also called the Temple of Diana). Nearby, whitewashed houses surround the Cathedral of Évora, a massive Gothic structure begun in the 12th century. The Igreja de São Francisco features Gothic and baroque architecture along with the skeleton-adorned Chapel of Bones. 

Today’s Tour – Historic Évora

Today we headed east to the laid-back Alentejo countryside and the history-rich university town of Évora.

Roman Temple

We took a walking tour of Évora’s preserved-in-whitewash old section, marveling at its Corinthian-columned Roman Temple.

Evora Cathedral

We visited the Romanesque and Gothic cathedral.

Inside the cathedral is a alter.

Inside the cathedral is a sumptuous Baroque chapel which has a 15th-century painted marble statue of a pregnant Mary.

A 16th-century pipe organ still works.

There was a collection of paintings depicting scenes from Christ’s life.
