Where in the World Are We?
We are in Reykjavik, Iceland.

REYKJAVÍK, ICELAND
The Smoky Bay.
Reykjavik stands as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of its people. Nestled on the island’s southwestern coast, this charming city is a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.
Reykjavik’s creation can be traced back to Iceland’s settlement period in the 9th century. Ingólfur Arnarson, an intrepid Norse chieftain, is said to have established the first permanent settlement in the area, marking the city’s birth. “Reykjavik” translates to “Smoky Bay,” derived from the steam rising from the hot springs that dot the region.
As the centuries unfolded, Reykjavik became a humble village into a bustling metropolis. In 1786, the city was designated as Iceland’s official trading town, which spurred its growth and development. However, it wasn’t until Iceland gained independence from Denmark in 1944 that Reykjavik truly blossomed into the vibrant capital, and it is still today.
Despite its relative youth as a capital city, Reykjavik boasts a rich historical tapestry. Visitors can immerse themselves in the city’s heritage at the National Museum of Iceland, which showcases artifacts spanning the nation’s history, from Viking settlements to modern times. The majestic Hallgrímskirkja, an iconic Lutheran church, stands tall as a symbol of national identity and offers breathtaking views of the city from its tower.
Reykjavik’s vibrant cultural scene is a source of pride for its residents. The city hosts numerous festivals annually, celebrating literature, music, and the arts. The renowned Reykjavik International Film Festival draws filmmakers from around the globe, while the Iceland Airwaves music festival showcases local and international talent.
Nature weaves its way into the fabric of Reykjavik, providing an enchanting backdrop to city life. The neighboring geothermal fields and hot springs, such as the famous Blue Lagoon, offer a tranquil retreat for relaxation and rejuvenation. The nearby Mount Esja beckons adventure seekers, enticing them to embark on exhilarating hiking trails.
In recent years, Reykjavik has gained international recognition for its commitment to sustainability and renewable energy. The city is at the forefront of environmentally conscious practices, harnessing the power of geothermal energy and fostering a culture of eco-friendly living.
Reykjavik’s creation and history are a testament to the indomitable spirit of its people and the enchanting beauty of its surroundings. This small capital city, with its captivating tales and awe-inspiring landscapes, invites visitors to embark on a journey through time, exploring the rich cultural heritage and vibrant spirit that define Reykjavik.

Today’s Excursion – Reykjavik, Iceland, on our own.
Harpa Center
Harpa is one of Reykjavík’s most striking landmarks and a centre of cultural and social life in the very heart of the city. Harpa is a tourist destination and an award-winning work of art that millions have visited since opening in 2011. Its design is a modern glass honeycomb concert hall & conference center, home to the national opera & symphony

Maritime Museum
The Reykjavik Maritime Museum, formerly Víkin Maritime Museum, is located by the old harbour in the capital of Iceland, Reykjavík, and is run by Reykjavik City. The museum was established in 2005 and is now one of five sites belonging to Reykjavik City Museum.

Whales of Iceland
Whales of Iceland is the largest whale museum in Europe, located in Reykjavík’s harbour area. The museum features life-size models of 23 whale species seen in Icelandic waters and man-made skeletons of select whales. There is no better way to learn about whales than seeing these giants up close in full size. You will leave with a new perspective and appreciation for these fascinating and beautiful animals.

Where in the World Are We?
We are in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland.

REYKJAVÍK, ICELAND
The land of ice, fire, and natural wonder
The capital of Iceland’s land of ice, fire, and natural wonder, Reykjavik, is a city like no other, blossoming among some of the world’s most vibrant and violent scenery. Home to two-thirds of Iceland’s population, Reykjavik is the island’s only real city. It is a welcoming and walkable place, full of bicycles gliding along boulevards or battling the wind when it rears up. Fresh licks of paint brighten the streets, and an artistic and creative atmosphere embraces studios, galleries, and the kitchens where an exciting culinary scene is burgeoning. Plot your adventures in the city’s hip bars and cozy cafes, or waste no time venturing to Iceland’s outdoor adventures.
Reykjavik’s buildings stand together – below the whip of winter’s winds – with the magnificent Hallgrímskirkja church, with its bell tower rising resolutely over the city. Iceland’s largest church’s design echoes the lava flows that have shaped this remote land and boasts a clean and elegant interior. The Harpa Concert Hall’s sheer glass facade helps it assimilate into the landscape, mirroring the city and harbor. Its LED lights shimmer in honor of Iceland’s most excellent illuminated performance – the northern lights.
Walk in the crusts between continents, feel the spray from bursts of geysers, and witness the enduring power of Iceland’s massive waterfalls. Whether you want to sizzle away in the earth-heated geothermal pools or hike to your heart’s content, you can do it all from Reykjavik – the colorful capital of this astonishing outdoor country.
SIGHTS

- Harpa Concert Hall

- Aurora Reykjavik

- Reykjavík City Hall & Lake Tjörnin
- CUISINE
Reykjavík’s culinary tapestry is woven with bold creativity and Nordic elegance. From Michelin-recommended restaurants like Dill to chic seafood bistros in the Old Harbor, guests can savor reindeer carpaccio, birch-glazed lamb, and fresh langoustine. Contemporary chefs elevate traditional Icelandic fare with precision and flair, offering a feast for all senses in Iceland’s cosmopolitan heart.
Today’s Excursion – The Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon
During this panoramic excursion to Thingvellir, Gullfoss, and Geysir, we experience the spectacular natural wonders of the Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon.
Reykjavik, Mosfellsheidi Heath and Almannagja
We drove to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to the Viking Parliament and Iceland’s geological and historical heritage. We viewed Almannagja, where Europe’s oldest national legislative assembly, the Icelandic Althing, was established in 930 and convened every summer for nearly eight centuries.

Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss Waterfall, and Geysir Geothermal Area
Thingvellir National Park is an UNESCO World Heritage Site of the magnificent Gullfoss Waterfall, Iceland’s most beautiful waterfall.

Then we drove to the Geysir geothermal area with its many hot springs. The most active one, Strokkur, spouts every few minutes.

Next was a visit to see and feed some Icelandic horses, and onto an extinct volcano with a lake in the middle.

The Blue Lagoon
We drove through the rugged lava fields of the Reykjanes peninsula towards the Blue Lagoon and stopped for approximately two hours to indulge in these waters. The Blue Lagoon owes its existence to the nearby geothermal power plant. The on-site facilities offered changing-room facilities, a tax-free shop, and a café. The water of the Lagoon is a steamy 98-102°F (36-39°C), mineral-rich and reputed for its healing properties. The blue colour of the water, the steam, and the thirteen-foot-high lava wall surrounding the Lagoon succeed in creating a unique atmosphere. This natural and very popular health spa is now a major attraction in the region and is considered one of the island’s most visited places.

Where in the World Are We?
We are in Isafjordur, in northeast Iceland.

Today’s Excursion – Life & Culture
We explored the traditional culture and lifestyle on the western fjords of Iceland during this tour of Ísafjörður and its surroundings.

Bolungarvik, Holskirkja Church
Bolungarvik is a village located on a picturesque bay surrounded by steep mountains. The Holskirkja Church, built in 1908, contains several interesting pieces. Among them are two grand church bells, meant to drive away phantoms that were believed to reside on the heath. We enjoyed hearing several local songs sung to us at the church.

Maritime Museum
The Maritime Museum is situated in one of the oldest houses in Ísafjörður and three other well-preserved historic homes, all circa 1780. Typical Icelandic refreshments include schnapps, dried fish, and shark (preserved Icelandic-style).

Saturday, May 10, 2025 – Photo of the Day – Akureyri, Iceland

Where in the World Are We?
We are in Akureyri, Iceland, on the north coast of Iceland

AKUREYRI, ICELAND
Iceland’s Capital of the North
Iceland’s Capital of the North is the gateway to a thrilling land of roaring waterfalls, soaring volcanoes, and glorious wildlife. Although it lies a mere 60 miles from the Arctic Circle, Akureyi blossoms with a bright, cosmopolitan feel and explodes into life during the summer, when its outdoor cafes and open-air bathing spots fill up with visitors ready to immerse themselves in Iceland’s cinematic scenery.
Feel the thundering impact of Iceland’s celebrated natural wonders shaking your bones at Godafoss Waterfalls, known as the ‘Waterfalls of the Gods’. Here, the Skjálfandafljót River unleashes a colossal torrent of water over charcoal-black rocks below. Or, find some peace at the Botanical Gardens, which opened in 1957 and offers space for contemplation amid plants that bloom with unexpected vibrancy, even at this northerly latitude.
The Lutheran, Akureyrarkirkja Church, rises like a grand church organ and is the town’s most striking landmark. The 112-step climb is worth the effort to see light flooding through its narrow stained-glass windows, spreading colorful patchworks
across the interior. Magic and mythology are essential elements of Icelandic folklore, and you’ll even bump into giant sculptures of grizzled, child-snatching trolls on the town’s high street.
Or, meet more earthly – but no less magical – creatures in the waters around Akureyi, where immense blue whales cruise by, and dolphins playfully leap.
SIGHTS
- Akureyrarkirkja (The Church of
Akureyri) - Akureyri Botanical Garden
- Hafnarstræti Boutiques

- CUISINE
Akureyri’s gastronomic identity reflects Iceland’s northern spirit with refined charm. Enjoy Arctic trout, tender lamb, and wild herbs reimagined with modern sensibility. Whether at a fine-dining restaurant or a tucked-away bistro, ingredients are celebrated for purity and provenance. Pair your meal with views of snow-dusted mountains or fjordside calm for
a complete northern indulgence.
Today’s Excursion – Kjarnaskógur Forest Stroll
We explored this picturesque hiking excursion in the Kjarnaskógur Forest.
Akureyri, Kjarnaskógur Forest, Guided Walk, Towering Trees, Brunná Stream, Sun Clock
The Kjarnaskógur Forest is a once-barren landscape transformed into a thriving forest and a testament to successful reforestation efforts. We marveled at the lush, green surroundings and towering trees, breathed in the crisp Icelandic air, and soaked in the tranquility of diverse woodlands.
The Kjarnaskógur Forest is also paradise for birdwatchers, with over 210 recorded bird species, including those found in the
adjoining Kjarnaskógur Wetlands, a haven for bird enthusiasts. Please keep your eyes peeled for colourful avian residents like the rare, strict primrose and bluebell, and learn about their habitats from your expert guide. The wild vegetation in the woods is
highly diversified, offering many plant species to discover. Enhance your birding experience during a stop at the dedicated
shelter by the Hundatjörn Marsh in Naustaborgir.

We then went into Akureyri to explore the town center.

Thursday, May 8, 2025 – Photo of the Day – Torshavn, Faroe Islands

Where in the World Are We?
We are in Torshavn, Faroe Islands.

TÓRSHAVN, FAROE ISLANDS
Quaint, charming, and heritage-rich city
Titanic scenery, mist-whipped mountains, and staggering oceanic vistas await you here in the Faroe Islands – a far-flung archipelago of immense natural beauty. This remote and isolated gathering of 18 islands – adrift in the far North Atlantic Ocean – is a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and colourful Tórshavn bustles up against the seafront, forming one of the tiniest capital cities in the world. Wander between pretty, half-timbered houses and visit one of the world’s oldest parliament buildings during your time here. With Viking history swirling too, Torshavn is a quaint, charming, and heritage-rich city.
Surrounded by thrilling landscapes and cosy Scandi culture, the Faroe Islands are an envy-inducing, off-the-beaten-track destination. From Torshavn, scatter to your choice of island destinations, or spend time soaking in the storybook appeal and clarity of air in the scenic old town. Pop into local shops or head for restaurants, where you can taste local foods like salt-cured fish and hunks of lamb.
As you explore these extraordinary, lost islands, see waterfalls plummeting directly into the ocean from vertical cliffs, along with emerald-green carpeted fjords. Puffins and sea birds relish the island’s craggy sea cliffs and coastline – visit the island of Mykines to see the birds burrowing deep into the cliffs to nest.
Strap on your hiking boots to rise to the challenge of the mesmerising scenery. Fjords etch into the coastline, and you can encounter peaceful lakes and massive valleys dug out by glaciers. Off-shore, sea stacks totter up out of the swelling, frothy waves.
SIGHTS
• Tinganes Historic District
• Skansin Fortress
• Guðrun & Guðrun Boutique
• Nordic House
• Öström Design Store
• Tórshavn Cathedral
CUISINE
In Tórshavn, tradition and innovation harmonize across every plate. Dine on sea urchin, fermented lamb, and seasonal herbs in settings that embrace Nordic purity. At KOKS, the Faroe Islands’ acclaimed fine dining temple, each course unveils flavors from the raw and the remote. Tórshavn offers culinary poetry in every bite, from harborside bistros to reimagined farmhouses.
Today’s Excursion – Scenic Faroes
We explored the capital and largest city of the Faroe Islands during this panoramic excursion to Tórshavn and its surroundings.
Tórshavn, Eidi and Funning Viewpoints, and Scenic Bridge
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive north, past idyllic villages, en route to photo stops at the Eidi and
Funning viewpoints. During your stops, see ‘the only bridge over the Atlantic’, as it is sometimes called, which spans the
narrow channel of Sundini to connect Eysturoy with the larger island of Streymoy. Because the channel is so narrow,
spectacular eddies form at the base of the bridge when the current is running strong with the tide. During your visit, you are
invited to walk the short distance, ‘over the Atlantic’.
Sea Stacks and Slættaratindur Mountain
Next, re-board your coach, continue past Eidi, and cross the mountains to Gjógv Village. Along the way, take in a splendid view
of two very distinctive sea stacks known as ‘The Giant and the Hag’, and pass by the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands, the
approximately 2,894-foot-high (about 882-metre-high) Slættaratindur.
Gjógv Village, Refreshments and Tórshavn Viewpoint
Upon arrival in Gjógv Village, see the approximately 617-foot-long (about 188-metre-long) gorge as a natural harbour for fishing boats, and stop for cake and coffee at a local guesthouse.

Tuesday, May 6, 2025 – Photo of the Day – Bergen, Norway

Where in the World Are We?
We are in Bergen, Norway.

BERGEN, NORWAY
The country’s second-biggest city
The crooked, pastel-colored warehouses of Bergen’s World Heritage waterfront lean together charmingly, welcoming visitors to this city at the heart of Norway’s most extraordinary cinematic landscapes. It may be the country’s second-biggest city, but the villagey feel here always provides a warm welcome, even when the weather lives up to its famously damp reputation.
Bergen’s colorful waterfront, Bryggen, is a ramshackle line-up of incredible Hanseatic warehouses, built following the devastating fire of 1702, which ransacked the city. These iconic warehouses have stood proudly ever since, with Bergen growing and expanding around the colorful facades. Behind them, a labyrinth of narrow alleyways and wooden decking waits, alive with artisan craft shops and bustling galleries. Fløyen Mountain watches over the city, and you can take a short but steep hike up to the panoramic viewpoints, or jump on the funicular, which trundles visitors up and down the incline. At the top, spectacular views of Bergen jutting out into the dark seas below unfold before you.
Wait until evening to see the sunset painting glorious golden light across the city and waves, and Bergen’s lights flickering into life. Nærøyfjorden, a deeply etched fjord nearby, is perhaps Norway’s most photographed and iconic piece of scenery. A cruise through the base of this spectacular, narrow fjord, parting the glass-smooth, inky waters, is an utterly humbling experience, as the claustrophobically close slopes rise imposingly over you. Sognefjord also stretches out nearby and is Norway’s longest fjord, adorned with plunging waterfalls and vibrant farms during summer.
SIGHTS
- Bryggen Wharf (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
- Fløibanen Funicular
- Fish Market
- KODE Art Museums
- St. Mary’s Church
- CUISINE
Bergen’s culinary scene is steeped in coastal heritage and Nordic refinement. In intimate waterfront restaurants, relish delicate cod, langoustine, and wild mushroom preparations. At Bare or Colonialen, tasting menus celebrate seasonal, locally foraged ingredients with artistic precision. From traditional fish soup to contemporary Nordic cuisine, every dish in Bergen tells a story of elegance and place.
Today’s Excursion – Scenic Bergen
On this introduction to Bergen, we saw all the highlights of this lovely city, known as the Gateway to the Fjords. This UNESCO World Heritage city has the ideal combination of nature, culture, and exciting urban life.
Bergen Scenic Drive
Your scenic drive will take you to the southern residential areas, passing the Royal Residence, Gamlehaugen, Grieghallen, the
modern concert hall named after Norway’s great composer Edvard Grieg, and the Bergen Theater.
Hanseatic Bryggen
Continuing on, drive past the fish market and the narrow streets of Hanseatic Bryggen, which have houses dating back to the 18th century. The original buildings were destroyed in a fire at the beginning of the 18th century and were rebuilt in the same style as the former buildings from 1350. Your guide will take you on a journey back in time, where you will learn more about the fascinating development of this old Hanseatic city. Admire St. Mary’s Church, dating back to 1170, and one of Norway’s finest examples of Romanesque architecture. Pass by Koengen, which was once an army depot, and see the medieval Bergenhus
Fortress.
