Thai Performance at Siam Niramit with Dinner

We experienced Thailand’s traditions, flavors, and performing arts during this unforgettable excursion to Siam Niramit.

Thai Village of the Four Regions
We drove to the Thai Village of the Four Regions. Nestled adjacent to a small pond alongside the Siam Niramit Theatre, the Thai Village of the Four Regions offers a fascinating glimpse of the traditional lifestyles, arts, and crafts of rural Thailand.

Siam Niramit, Thai Dinner and Show
Following our visit to this themed village, we proceeded to a delicious Thai buffet dinner at Siam Niramit’s elegant restaurant, which overlooks the Thai Village of the Four Regions.

After dinner, we proceeded to the theatre for an unforgettable and entertaining three-act show featuring over 100 performers, lavish costumes, and stunning set designs. Enhanced special effects and the world’s most advanced technology are used to produce a very realistic, stimulating, and inspiring experience. Of special note is Act II, which offers a unique look at how the Thai people conceive the concept of heaven and hell. While heaven is so beautiful with divas and angels (literally) flying around, hell is quite scary indeed. Watch as drinkers are forced to imbibe from a cauldron of boiling water, and adulterers are compelled to climb horribly spiky thorn trees. The stage setup and special effects alone are spectacular and very realistic, with amazing costumes.

March 30, 2026 – Singapore

Where in the World Are We?

We are in Singapore.

SINGAPORE, SINGAPORE
The surprising superstitions of the Lion City

Superstitions are like culinary specialties: every part of the world has its own, and discovering those of new
countries is always an experience, if not tasty, then at least fun.

Singapore is no exception to the rule in South-East Asia that gives pride of place to the supernatural,
and offers some surprising sparks of superstition that you can observe with a smile or take home with you,
should they bring you luck… You never know.

Let’s start with a belief that will please the cheapskates: in Singapore, you don’t gift watches or shoes.
Watches symbolize the end, and ‘giving a clock’ in Mandarin sounds very similar to ‘attending a funeral’.
To avoid bringing death, no watches or clocks are given. For shoes, the same battle: shoe is pronounced
the same way as evil in Mandarin. So it’s in very bad taste to give shoes. Two beliefs that can save a lot of
money…

Also forbidden: cutting your nails after dark. In Singapore, it is believed that this practice attracts angry
spirits who could bring misfortune on the house and its inhabitants. Never point at the moon either,
especially if it is full. The risk? Finding yourself with the tips of your ears cut off in your sleep. Also to be
avoided: whistling at night. This practice, which is harmless everywhere else, seems to please ghosts in
this part of the world. While at night, you could end up with a string of not always benevolent ghosts
hanging around your neck. Fortunately, the best way to deal with this is to wash your feet and face as soon
as you get home, so as to ward off the wandering spirits.

Another rule of the Lion City, which is also found in Vietnam, is that you don’t take photos of three people.
Two, yes. Four, yes, but three, no. It’s bad luck for the person in the middle to be the first to die.
Finally, let’s finish with a rather amusing and intriguing superstition involving new owners, a new flat or
house, and a pineapple. For good fortune to fall upon a new house and its owners or occupants, when they
first enter their new home, they must knock on the door three times and shout ‘huat ah’ (good luck) as
they roll a pineapple around. Derived from Feng Shui, this practice is said to purify the premises. The story
doesn’t say, however, whether a tin of pineapples will do the trick.

March 26, 2026 – Benoa, Bali, Indonesia

Where in the World Are We?

We are in Bali, Indonesia.

BENOA, BALI, INDONESIA
Island of the Gods, land of a thousand temples, or the world’s last paradise.

As superlative as these monikers may sound, they do not do justice to the island’s reality. Bali is
as good as everyone says – verdant mountains with terraced rice fields in one direction, black sand beaches
in another and captivating people that will leave even the most seasoned traveller humbled.

If you’re looking for a Garden of Eden that really does have it all, Bali ticks all the boxes. The rich
and diverse culture of the island is what sets Bali apart from Indonesia’s (many) other tropical paradises.
The country’s estimated 10,000 Buddhist-Hindu temples, with their daily offerings of lotus flowers and
fruit, are a testament to the gentleness of the islander’s belief.

Then there is the vibrant arts and crafts scene, notably in Ubud in the centre of the island, but prolific
everywhere. Ideal souvenirs to bring back range from gorgeous silver jewellery to intricate wood carvings.
Additionally, do try to see a traditional dance if possible, particularly if accompanied by local gamelan
music.

No one could mention Bali without mentioning the food. Dishes range from elaborate meals to street food
bites, but all are, without exception, ambrosia. Do not miss out on tasting a succulent chicken satay, betutu
(apparently the King’s favourite meal), and sambal matah. But whatever you decide to discover, you can be
assured of a taste sensation that will remain with you long after you have returned home.

World Cruise Event – From Paddy to Plate

Bali is a living museum.

Silverseas took us on an experience at Tanah Gajah set amidst the lush landscape of Bali’s culture-rich highlands.

Welcomed by the soft cadence of bamboo instruments, we begin our introduction to a culture guided by balance, gratitude, and ancestral legacies. Moving freely among the Balinese artisans and spiritual leaders gathered here, we discover the measured gestures of dance, the quiet poetry of palm-leaf manuscripts, the making of music, and so much more. As dusk settles, a ceremonial procession leads the way to an altern-lit rijsttafel beneath the stars – a procession of spiced dishes, celebrating the richness of Bali’s harvest. Gamelan music carries throughout the terraces as flavors unfold, giving way to the hypnotic cadence of the kecak dance. In a final, symbolic movement of renewal, an ogoh-ogoh effigy is briefly set alight, before dances the evening draws to a close, the quiet soul of Bali lingering with us long after we’ve departed.

March 25, 2026 – Lombok, Indonesia

Where in the World Are We?

We are in Lombok, Indonesia.

Home to the second highest volcano and an amazing, unique wildlife.

An island of startling contradictions and contrasts Lombok exudes an aura of the staid and the rural a
genteel way of life in a quiet backwater. Located to the east and across a deep strait from its illustrious
neighbor Bali the island of Lombok offers unique culture beautiful landscapes and a far less frenetic
pressured atmosphere than Bali.

However savvy travelers agree that Lombok’s calm existence may soon come to an end as it is fast
becoming the new “in place” after Bali. The island was once ruled by a series of Sasak princes who spent
their time fending off successive invasions from Sumbawanese and Makassarese attackers. In 1740 the
Balinese established a stronghold here and imposed their culture on the Sasaks. Later Lombok came
under Dutch rule until the country achieved independence.

The western part of the almost circular island is well irrigated by mountain streams and artesian springs.
Here Balinese and Sasaks have sculpted handsome rice terraces Hindu temples vie for attention with
glistening white mosques rising from picturesque rural villages. More dramatic is the southern coast with
beautiful sandy bays set between rocky outcrops.

Most of Lombok’s attractions are concentrated in the western district of the island within a nine-mile radius
of the capital Mataram. Members of Lombok’s polyglot population – Sasak Balinese Chinese and Arab –
continue their laidback traditional ways.

Excursion – Lombok’s Cultural Heritage

We discovered the cultural heritage and traditional arts and crafts of Lombok during this excursion.

Gili Mas, Mataram District, Cakranegara Town and Mayura Water Palace
We drove to the small town of Cakranegara, located in the Mataram District. We visited is made to the Mayura Water Palace. One of Lombok’s religious and historical buildings, it was originally known as the ‘Garden Palace of Kelepug’, a name derived from the ‘kelepug’ sound that emerged when the swift water discharged from springs in the middle of the palace’s pond. The Mayura Water Palace emotes a peaceful, natural, religious and historical aura. The palace is equipped with a pool, arranged in a way that looks like a beautiful garden. Although the Mayura Water Palace was designed with Balinese and Javanese influences, it also imparts a nuanced religious feel. In some special rituals, the temple still functions as a place of worship of the Gods.

Downtown Mataram and NTB Museum
We continued on to downtown Mataram, the capital city of Lombok, for a visit to the NTB Museum.
