Exploring Cozumel: Mayan Ruins and Stunning Beaches

Where in the World Are We?

We are in Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico, on the west coast.

COZUMEL QUINTANA ROO, MEXICO
Paradise Beneath and Beyond the Waves
Dive into the exuberant, colorful world of Cozumel – a Mexican island of exceptional scuba diving, snorkeling, and dazzling beaches. Abundant underwater ecosystems swirl among reefs of black coral – attracting experts and beginners alike to the azure waters of this island.
Mayan mythology says Cozumel was the sanctuary of the Goddess of fertility and love, Ixchel, and this seductive Mexican island of adventure and allure leaves all visitors head over heels.
Waiting across the Caribbean waters from Playa del Carmen, and a world away from its lively resorts, Cozumel is an idyllic land of gently curving palm trees and tropical shores. Playa Palancar sits on the western coast, with velvety sand and balmy Caribbean waters. Relax, with just the notes of the washing sea and whispering palm trees accompanying you during splashes through the shallow waves or tanning sessions on the soft sand. Playa El Cielo – or the appropriately named Heaven Beach – is home to a divine constellation of starfish resting on the seabed, below its glass-clear waters.
Stingrays and sea turtles also swirl in the waters, as you snorkel through some of the island’s most vibrant and diverse displays of marine life. Beach bars serve up spicy Mexican fare with a seaside twist – like delicious shrimp fajitas, fish tacos, and lime-squeezed ceviches.
The crumbling San Gervasio ruins, meanwhile, offer cultural intrigue and a fascinating insight into the remarkable ancient Mayan civilization. Despite the presence of majestic ruins from antiquity, it’s the giant iguanas, soaking up the sun in clearings, who often unwittingly steal the show.
Today’s Excursion – The Best of Cozumel, Duration
We indulged our senses with a taste of Mayan culture, traditions, and natural beauty during this picturesque excursion to beautiful Cozumel.
San Gervasio Mayan Ruins
We departed the pier for the scenic site of the San Gervasio Mayan Ruins, the sanctuary of Ixchel, Goddess of Fertility and Good Health. We took a guided walking tour through the ruins and learned about the Mayan culture and its fascinating history.

El Mirador
We continued our scenic ride around the island, marveling at the pristine island and amazing turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, and stopped for a photo at El Mirador, a rocky formation carved out by the ocean.

Pueblo del Maiz (Chocolate and Honey) & Tequila Tasting
We travelled back in time and were enveloped by the mysticism of the Mayans at Pueblo del Maíz. We enjoyed the ancestral flavor of cocoa while learning about the process of making chocolate, and discovered the sacred bees in their natural habitat while listening to legendary stories. We learned about the tequila-making process and had time at the end to shop for local products, spirits, and souvenirs.

Where in the World Are We?
We are in Boston, Mass.

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS
Fancy a tea in Boston?
Boston is one of the oldest cities in the United States but also the birthplace of the Revolutionary War. One event in particular marked history: the Boston Tea Party. The year was 1773, and Great Britain was ruling its American colonies with an iron fist in a steel glove, increasingly taxing its subjects across the Atlantic. This situation was growing harsher and harsher for the American colonists. In May, the Tea Act was passed. It exempted the British East India Company alone from all taxes on the sale of tea in the American colonies, creating a de facto monopoly in North America. Worried that free competition on other products would end, colonists and importers banded together. On 16 December 1773, British East India Company ships docked in Boston harbour. They were stormed by colonists disguised as Mohawk Indians, and their cargo of tea was thrown overboard. 350 crates were left to brew in the waters of Boston Harbor to convey discontent to King George III. In retaliation, the King of England took sanctuary against the colony of Massachusetts by enacting highly penalizing laws, demanding repayment for the lost tea chests, and closing the port of Boston. This response prompted all the colonies to join forces behind Massachusetts, leading a few years later to the Declaration of Independence of the thirteen North American colonies.

Where in the World Are We?
We are in Boston, Mass, USA.

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS
A vibrant place with a lively cultural and culinary scene.
Historic yet revolutionary, few places embody the American dream quite as well as Boston, and you’ll feel the strong independent streak and pride in the founding ideals of freedom and independence wherever you go. Skyscrapers mingle harmoniously with cobbled streets, and every footstep here promises new tales of legend, daring, and valour, as you walk through the pages of history and immerse yourself in the stories of one of the USA’s oldest cities.
The flashing colours of Fall – a period when the foliage around Boston explodes with blazes of red, orange, and purple – attract visitors from across the world, more than compensating for the northerly city’s harsh winters. Green open spaces like Boston Public Garden also decorate the town, offering breathing space and the chance to enjoy blossom-perfumed sanctuary, as you sit among scampering squirrels and quiet boating lakes.
Sometimes, Boston feels like an open-air history museum, and the Freedom Trail links the city’s many valuable historic sites. It’s no exaggeration to say that the world’s history pivoted significantly on this humble two-and-a-half-mile trail. Wander across incendiary sites like the Boston Massacre Site, and Bunker Hill – where the first shots of the American Revolutionary War were fired, eventually leading to independence from British rule.
Fenway Park is the cathedral-like home of Boston’s famous Red Sox, and a must-visit for any sports fan. You’ll also find plenty of acclaimed New England seafood to sample, including famous buttery clam chowder. Restaurants in the thriving Seaport District serve freshly harvested crab and lobster, accompanied by spectacular views of the crashing Atlantic waves.
BOSTON COMMON
The oldest public park in the U.S. and undoubtedly the largest and most famous of the town commons around which New England settlements were traditionally arranged. From 1634, the Common started as 50 acres where freemen could graze their cattle.

Today’s Excursion – Walking the Freedom Trail
Travel back to Revolutionary Boston with a walk along the Freedom Trail.
Freedom Trail Walking Tour
Depart the pier for the brief transfer to the Boston Common. Located on the edge of Beacon Hill, it is the oldest public park in
America. Upon arrival at the gold-domed New State House, leave your coach and begin your approximate two-mile (about 3.2-
kilometre) guided walking tour. As you stroll along Boston Common, view one of the most beautiful war memorials in the
country, a bronze tribute to Robert Gould Shaw’s 54th regiment.

Granary Burial Ground & Faneuil Hall
Next, continue on to the Granary Burial Ground, site of the graves of John Hancock, Samuel Adams, and Paul Revere, then take
the Freedom Trail past the Old Corner Bookstore, the Old South Meeting House and the Old State House to Faneuil Hall, the
meeting hall of such famous speakers as John Hancock, Susan B. Anthony, and John F. Kennedy. Today, it is a bustling
complex of shops and restaurants.

Old North Church
Leaving Faneuil Hall, cross into the North End by Paul Revere’s House, en route to the Old North Church, also known as ‘Christ
Church’. During your guided visit, learn about the fascinating church’s history.

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA
Surrounded by natural treasures and glorious seascapes.
A city that thrives on a diet of music, outdoor events, and ocean-faring history, Nova Scotia’s capital – and Atlantic Canada’s largest conurbation – oozes salt-licked charm. The star-shaped fortress of Halifax Citadel sits above the city, while down below, Halifax revolves around its bustling harbour. Here, jet skis skid across the water, and heritage ships jaunt to scenic offshore islands. Music carries on the waterfront’s breeze as summer’s events play out, while a hefty population of pubs and restaurants provides all the space required for sitting back and relaxing. The shorefront boardwalk invites you on a gentle stroll along the waves, wandering back through Halifax’s history. The Canadian Museum of Immigration waits at Pier 21. It is the doorway to a country of opportunity for so many, with over a million immigrants taking their first footsteps into Canada here. The pier’s wooden boards are dotted with cafes, craft shops, and artist studios. Sail deeper into seafaring heritage at the Maritime Museum. As the closest city to the sinking of the Titanic, recovered victims were transported to – and many were buried – in Halifax. The story and items from the doomed vessel are displayed in the museum’s collection. Peggy’s Cove lighthouse is nearby, and this immaculate little lighthouse is one of Canada’s favourites, watching out stoically over the Atlantic’s waves. With rich pickings available from its coastal location, the fruits of the sea are served up in the fryers of Halifax’s varied restaurants – try seared scallops and juicy mussels. Round off any meal with a buttery blueberry grunt dessert – delicious when warm with a dollop of melting vanilla ice cream.

Wednesday, May 21, 2025 – Photo of the Day – St. John’s Newfoundland

Where in the World Are We?
We are in St. John’s, Newfoundland, in Northeast Canada.

ST. JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND
North America’s oldest and most historically engaging places.
Colorful, white-trimmed buildings splash a haze of bright beauty across the spectacular Newfoundland coastline of St. John’s. Picturesque, steep streets roll down to the seafront, and the charming architecture contrasts beautifully against the wild and rugged shoreline, with redolent pine forests spreading out behind. The province’s capital, St. John’s, is a lively outpost – and one of North America’s oldest and most historically engaging places.
A rich trading history of haggling and hawking has played out on these animated, historic streets, especially Water Street, which is one of North America’s oldest. St. John’s boasts an incredible history, as the launch point for daring transatlantic voyages, and a leap of human ingenuity is celebrated on Signal Hill. It was here that the first transatlantic transmission was received in 1901. Rise to obtain stunning views of the Atlantic and the city spreading around the harbor from the fortified Cabot Tower. Rugged hiking trails and puffin-nesting cliffs add extra character to this remarkable island.
The twin bell towers of the Basilica of St. John the Baptist are St. John’s landmark, and a National Historic Site dedicated to the city’s namesake saint. The Quidi Vidi fishing village is an arresting stop, inhabited by busy artisans and local craft brewers, who produce characterful beers befitting this exuberant city of bold colors.
George Street is the perfect spot to try a glass or two – the street is said to have the most bars per person anywhere in Canada.
SIGHTS
- Signal Hill
- Jellybean Row
- The Rooms
- St. John’s Harbour
- Cape Spear Lighthouse
CUISINE
St. John’s, Newfoundland, boasts a unique cuisine shaped by its coastal location and cultural heritage. Traditional dishes like fish and brewis (salted cod, scrunchions, and hard bread) and Jiggs dinner (boiled salt beef, cabbage, carrots, turnips, and potatoes) are staples. Fresh seafood, particularly mussels and cod, is prominently featured, while bakeapple pie, made with cloudberries native to the region, is a sweet treat. The province’s maritime history and cultural influences have crafted a distinct culinary
identity that’s both hearty and flavorful.
Today’s Activities Included:
10:15 Enrichment Lecture with Elliott Kalb: Olympic Tales, and Why It Brings The World Together
Writing and producing Olympic shows for NBC since 1992—both summer and winter—Kalb discusses the Olympic games and what Olympic stories have brought him to tears.

11:15 What Lies Beneath?
The title of this lecture has a double meaning: what physically lies beneath the ocean’s surface as we sail (ship wrecks, marine life, Russian flag), and also what is the dark side of ocean activity (from myths about sea monsters, to the real practice of piracy and smuggling)

Today’s Excursion – Signal Hill & St. John’s Highlights
St. John’s, North America’s oldest European-settled city, is the capital of Newfoundland, Canada’s youngest province, and
Britain’s oldest overseas colony. For hundreds of years, it has played host to explorers and conquerors, marauding pirates and
merchant adventurers.
Signal Hill
Our tour features historic Signal Hill, where the Italian inventor Marconi received the first wireless transatlantic signal in 1901.
Life Magazine tells us that this site gave birth to the Information Age. Enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of the city
and rugged coastline while viewing the continent’s most easterly point in the distance and perhaps an iceberg or two! View the
numerous storyboards and learn about the site’s 18th-century battles and 20th-century aviation wonders. Cabot Tower, built to
commemorate both Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and the 400th anniversary of John Cabot’s voyage to the New World,
sits high atop Signal Hill and is an excellent backdrop for that special photo to remember your time spent here.

Quidi VidI Village
Travel to the picturesque village of Quidi Vidi. Enjoy a walk through this quaint village located at the east end of St. John’s that
will take you back to a different time, reminiscent of Newfoundland and Labrador island outports.

St. John’s National Historic District
Next, a drive through the New World’s first downtown and the St. John’s National Historic Ecclesiastical District, composed mainly of 19th- and 20th-century buildings and landscape features valued for their historical associations with religion and education in Newfoundland and Labrador. The four denominations represented in the district made considerable contributions to society’s spiritual, educational, charitable, and political fabric. We will see numerous historic buildings, including two National Historic churches, and the colourful Victorian wooden housing characteristic of St. John’s. We make brief stops to point out the birthplace of the British Empire and the Government House, which was built the same year as the White House but at a higher cost.
